Some of the TOP Hotels in Bali

Bali's most famous and crowded resort is Kuta beach, a six-kilometre sweep of golden sand, with plenty of accommodation, shops and nightlife. Nearby Sanur is much quieter, but most backpackers prefer the beaches of peaceful east-coast Candi Dasa and traveller-oriented Lovina on the north coast. The island's other major destination is the cultural centre of Ubud , a still charming but undeniably commercialized overgrown village, where traditional dances are staged every night of the week and the streets are full of arts-and-crafts galleries.

Bataks are very skilled and sophisticated in the arts of metalworking, woodcarvng, and also work in bone, shell and bark. But the making of such objects as massive silver earrings, shell armbands, copper wire neck rings, big long-stemmed copper pipes weighing up to % kg, are all dying arts now. Their woodcarvings incorporate many magic signs and fertility symbols into the decorations. Figureheads of carved hornbills adorn boats. Buffalo or mountain goat 'powder horns' are artistically made, used as containers for magical substances. Magic augery books (pustaha) are made from bark or bamboo and contain esoteric idioms spoken by priests and female mourners. These pustahas form the most important part of Batak written literature; old ones cost up to Rp50,000 in the tourist shops of Medan and Prapat. Other Karo books on legendary history include pustaha bintang and bilang-bilang ('lamentation of unhappy lovers'), written on bone or on bamboo tubes with beautifully decorated ends. These are sung in a rhythmical melody, sometimes over the death of a child. The Karo script, transmitted down through the generations orally, is used only as part of the decorative motifs.
