For the cheapies, stay in the Chinese quarter. Losmen
Amen is Rp600 single, Rp1000 double. Wisma Pemuda, JI.
Indra, next to Kantor Gubernuran, is clean and new with
fans, full board Indonesian food Rp400 per day. Wisma
Melati, JI. Kartini, offers all meals and sleep for
Rp2000. Also try Wisma Puteri Gading. sights: The British
Fort Marlborough still stands but is occupied by the
army; they'll let you enter. Built like a castle, there
are old gravestones with English inscriptions inside
the gatehouse. From the top of the castle walls you
get a view of the sleepy harbor and the pasar, oxcarts,
and whirling kites. Visit Dendam Taksuda Botanical Gardens
to see wild orchids and the ref/esia, the largest flower
in the world, but blooms only in October. Wander around
the fishermens' streets along the harbor by Sekolah
Sint Carolus. Visit Pasar Ikan. Opposite Mushalla Nuralfalah,
behind the Protestant Church, is an old Christian cemetery.
from Bengkulu: A road leads from Bengkulu across the
Bengkulu Mountains towards Palembang. There are no flights
north to Padang or south to Lampung from Bengkulu. Take
the bus from Bengkulu to Lubuklinggau, 3 hours (stops
midway at Curup), climbing up the spine of Bukit Barisan
over a road of wild pigs, monkeys, giant sunflowers,
ricefields, buffalo horn tipped buildings, and tea plantations
(at Kepahiang). vicinity of Bengkulu: There's a nice
beach outside of town. See Pantai Panjang's sailboats
by taking a sandy path from the city. Explore Bengkulu
Province by jeep or bus; the mail bus to Manna 140 km
to the south takes 7 hours over a washboard road. If
you're into megaliths, don't miss cool-climate high
altitude Pasar Alam, on the way to Palembang, where
you get a good view over Mt. Dempo. Further south in
Lampung District there's Semanka Bay and the 40 km long
Lake Ranau; good fishing. Curup is known for its long
traditions of music, dancing and poetry. Visit the goldmining
country north of Curup (N.E. of Bengkulu); 19th Century
waterwheels are used for gold extraction at Muara Aman.
