Pasemah Highlands

Some of the TOP Hotels in Bali

Bali's most famous and crowded resort is Kuta beach, a six-kilometre sweep of golden sand, with plenty of accommodation, shops and nightlife. Nearby Sanur is much quieter, but most backpackers prefer the beaches of peaceful east-coast Candi Dasa and traveller-oriented Lovina on the north coast. The island's other major destination is the cultural centre of Ubud , a still charming but undeniably commercialized overgrown village, where traditional dances are staged every night of the week and the streets are full of arts-and-crafts galleries.

On this plateau near Lahat are megalithic remains dating from as far back as 100 A.D.; said to be the most concentrated collection of monumental symbolic culture in Indonesia. Huge queerly-shaped stones are carved into fantastic figures and groups of figures: warriors mounted on elephants, men riding and wrestling buffaloes, animals copulating, men fighting anenormous snake. A great number of these menhirs, dolmens, stone cist graves, and terraced sanctuaries were erected at a time when metals were already known in the area; figures carry swords, wear helmets, rings, anklets, and men hold giant bronze kettledrums, artifacts which all belong to the Bronze Age. Warriors have bulging eyes, strong jaws, and short broad swords in their belts. The figures appear at first to be 3-dimensional but they are in fact basreliefs, the illusion being created by the skilful use of the curved surface of the boulders. Great attention is given to the carving of the heads; the rest of the body is roughly done. At Tegurwangi is a complex including the ruins of a large tomb; pillars are decorated with men riding elephants, faces have thick negroid lips. Two slab graves contain colored drawings. At Tanjungara, see the colored paintings in the inner walls of a cist grave; ferocious charging buffaloes carry warriorriders. The modern-day people of Pasemah, who believe they are descended from a Majapahit King from Java, still use some of this statuary as vow redemption shrines, calling upon their ancestors to bestow their blessings and to stave off ill-fortune. See some examples on Mt. Dempo.
