Some
of the TOP Hotels in Bali
Bali's
most famous and crowded resort is Kuta beach, a six-kilometre
sweep of golden sand, with plenty of accommodation,
shops and nightlife. Nearby Sanur is much quieter, but
most backpackers prefer the beaches of peaceful east-coast
Candi Dasa and traveller-oriented Lovina on the north
coast. The island's other major destination is the cultural
centre of Ubud , a still charming but undeniably commercialized
overgrown village, where traditional dances are staged
every night of the week and the streets are full of
arts-and-crafts galleries.

Catch a riverboat up the Batanghari (the longest river
in Sumatra) all the way to Sungaidareh; except to spend
Rp2-3000 for this slow hot trip. Down on the river front
you can also find boats to Jakarta, Singapore, and Banten.
hitching: From Jambito Palembang the going is slow.
Mostly oil tankers travel this route and you get only
40-50 km along the jungle road when you're forced to
flag down a taxi-bus. by bus: Daily buses to Palembang
cost Rp2500-3000 inclusive of river ferries. Sometimes
you get out and walk up to 12 km while the bus is pulled
by winches, or you help repair bridge planking so that
the bus can cross. Sometimes see tigers shitting in
headlight beams then scurrying off into the jungle.
See bridges bombed out by the Japanese and barefoot
men carrying engines on poles like dead animals. for
Lake Kerinci: Take bus first to Bangko (Rp 1000), then
by jeep across the mountainous jungles of South-central
Sumatra for 2 days to Sungaipenuh for Rp1800-2000. flights:
Merpati flights to Palembang, Rp7000. Also fly to Singapore
foraround Rp30,000. For free flights the best thing
is to get up in the control tower and talk to the planes
coming in to see if you can get a ride when tney leave.
The guys working there don't mind. If you get a ride
with Pertamina (Pelita Airlines) be sure to bargain;
they may offer a seat as low as half or 3%'s of a commercial
flight. Pelita flies fairly regularly in and out of
Jambi.
