Some
of the TOP Hotels in Bali
Bali's
most famous and crowded resort is Kuta beach, a six-kilometre
sweep of golden sand, with plenty of accommodation,
shops and nightlife. Nearby Sanur is much quieter, but
most backpackers prefer the beaches of peaceful east-coast
Candi Dasa and traveller-oriented Lovina on the north
coast. The island's other major destination is the cultural
centre of Ubud , a still charming but undeniably commercialized
overgrown village, where traditional dances are staged
every night of the week and the streets are full of
arts-and-crafts galleries.

Padang
to Lubuklinggau is beginning to took like an interstate
highway. Instead, sign up for a bus ride from Jambi
or from Padang to the Kerinci District, for volcanoes,
hotsprings, cinnamon trees, and a big lake. Kerinci
is yet undeveloped for tourists, i.e. no fruit salad
but big jeruk pangs for Rp25 or a whole cut fresh pineapple
for Rp20. getting there: Kerinci District goes by the
name of Sungaipenuh on the Bartholomew map and on bus
signs. It lies about 60 km up in the mountains from
Tapan which is less than halfway (200 km plus) between
Padang and Bengkulu. A.L.S. does the trip, but Habeko
is recommended. They use real buses (Mercedes) which
have glass windows, and rarely stop en route. Departure
each direction at 8 or 9 am, costs about Rp1250. Padang
to Sungaipenuh is 12 hours or so, a scenic drive along
the coast and through small villages.
