Some
of the TOP Hotels in Bali
Bali's
most famous and crowded resort is Kuta beach, a six-kilometre
sweep of golden sand, with plenty of accommodation,
shops and nightlife. Nearby Sanur is much quieter, but
most backpackers prefer the beaches of peaceful east-coast
Candi Dasa and traveller-oriented Lovina on the north
coast. The island's other major destination is the cultural
centre of Ubud , a still charming but undeniably commercialized
overgrown village, where traditional dances are staged
every night of the week and the streets are full of
arts-and-crafts galleries.

The
500,000 Lampungese call themselves Orang Pablan. Prior
to Islam they practiced a syncretic Buddhist Hindu ancestor
cult. The Lampungese have always had close contact with
the Banten culture of West Java and took the Islamic
faith early. Since 1932 when the Dutch started transmigrasi
schemes here in order to cut down on Java's overpopulation,
modern Javanese agricultural pioneers have settled in
these areas by the tens of thousands. In this province
you find sawah very similar to Java's and in many areas
where the Javanese have settled, the same overpopulation
and work-sharing problems as in a typical village on
Java have arisen, but without the corresponding high
fertility of soils, efficient drainage and water control
as is found on Java. In North Lampung, 10% of the population
are Javanese transmigrants, in South Lampung 60%, while
in Central Lampung, 75%. These Javanese have of course
brought their gamelan and we yang with them. archaeological
remains: Often these are far from the main roads. Stone
inscriptions are found at Pales, South Lampung; Talangpadang
(south-center); Liwa (north-east). Megalithic sculpture
at Batu Badad and Bojong. Hindu stone sculpture at Gunung
Sugih Baser. At Kenali (nortIwest) there's a menhir.
A slender Bodhisattva is still in loco at Pugung Raharjo,
Central Lampung.
