People of Enggano

Some of the TOP Hotels in Bali

Bali's most famous and crowded resort is Kuta beach, a six-kilometre sweep of golden sand, with plenty of accommodation, shops and nightlife. Nearby Sanur is much quieter, but most backpackers prefer the beaches of peaceful east-coast Candi Dasa and traveller-oriented Lovina on the north coast. The island's other major destination is the cultural centre of Ubud , a still charming but undeniably commercialized overgrown village, where traditional dances are staged every night of the week and the streets are full of arts-and-crafts galleries.

Enggano is presently a rehabilitation center for juvenile delinquents from Java. The islanders suffer greatly from their lack of communication with the mainland. Many of its people have ringworms, malaria and anaemia. Most are primary school dropouts. The approximately 1200 surviving Engganese live on fishing, coconuts, sale of copra, gardening cassava and taro. Enggano exports 20 tons of copra to Telukbetung each month, but it's a Chinese-owned enterprise. There are 5 clans Isukul spread over the entire island: The Kaharuba, Kaarubi, Kaitora, Kaahuao and the Kaono. A matrilineal society, descent is traced through the female line and farmlands are usually inherited by daughters. Half call themselves Christian, the other half call themselves Muslim. But actually this society is one of the last truly animist strongholds in Indonesia. Many features are left of the old religious system. Kowek, good and bad spirits, are placated at times of drought or pestilence by offerings of taro, bananas, and fish. When a person dies sometimes whole villages are completely dismantled and moved elsewhere. Although regarded as pagan and undesirable by Christian missionaries, the oldest men and women can still perform the E'aruhe and the Ya'udo native dances. Now younger people are taught these dances by elders for tourists. The E'ono Wakoroa ritual feast is staged occasionally to reconcile parties to a quarrel, prior to a fishing expedition or hunt, or else to celebrate a rite of passage. Official public performances of folk stories include: 'The Story About Copulation', 'The Story of The Person Who Became an Earthquake', and 'How a Child Became a Flying Dog'. Engganese culture is sure now to disappear as a result of assimilation into an indiscriminate Indonesian culture. vicinity of Enggano: Natives of Pulau Pagai Island to the north still use bows and arrows; bowstrings are made from entrails of animals. They also build 18-20 m long canoes. Untouched beaches. Catch boat from Padang, Rp2500, 24 hours.
