ENGGANO
ISLAND
Some
of the TOP Hotels in Bali
Bali's
most famous and crowded resort is Kuta beach, a six-kilometre
sweep of golden sand, with plenty of accommodation,
shops and nightlife. Nearby Sanur is much quieter, but
most backpackers prefer the beaches of peaceful east-coast
Candi Dasa and traveller-oriented Lovina on the north
coast. The island's other major destination is the cultural
centre of Ubud , a still charming but undeniably commercialized
overgrown village, where traditional dances are staged
every night of the week and the streets are full of
arts-and-crafts galleries.

The largest of a group of 6 islands off the S.W. coast
only 96 km from Bengkulu. The name means 'disappointment'
or 'mistake' in Portugese, and probably refers to some
ancient blunder in navigation. Native name is soloppo,
or simply 'the land'. In the center of Enggano is its
largest hill, Bua Bua (250 m). Buffaloes, pigs and cattle
are found in the wild. getting there: Catch a prahu
or a kapal motor from Bengkulu or from Bintuhan on the
South Sumatran mainland. Boats out to Enggano are not
that terribly frequent. Malakoni is the largest town
and boats from Bengkulu arrive in its harbor. transport:
The only tracks on the island connect the tiny north
coast villages of Banjar Sari, Meok, Kaana, Kabayupu
and Malakoni. River travel is out of the question since
the coastline is swampy and no river penetrates more
than 18 km inland. The southern monsoon lasts from July
to December.
