LAMPUNG FABRICS

Some of the TOP Hotels in Bali

Bali's most famous and crowded resort is Kuta beach, a six-kilometre sweep of golden sand, with plenty of accommodation, shops and nightlife. Nearby Sanur is much quieter, but most backpackers prefer the beaches of peaceful east-coast Candi Dasa and traveller-oriented Lovina on the north coast. The island's other major destination is the cultural centre of Ubud , a still charming but undeniably commercialized overgrown village, where traditional dances are staged every night of the week and the streets are full of arts-and-crafts galleries.

Two types of cloth are widespread in this district. The tampan, found especially in the Kroe Region, is made by the floating weft technique with brown and blue designs. This fabric covers dishes, gifts, and sacrificed offerings during festivities. Tapis sarungs, made by women for ritual occasions, have ancient simple and complex designs of human, land and water animals. But the principal motif is the Ship of the Dead. This socalled ship-cloth survives from an earlier culture, people who believed that the souls of the dead journeyed to the land of souls by ship. Big pieces of ship-cloth are used in circumcision ceremonies and weddings; for important conferences they are hung up on the wall to spread good vibes.
