Las Vegas Advisor Online Membership Information
The purpose of this web site is to promote Over 50 Baseball across the United States and to stimulate interest in the sixth annual "NATIONAL FUN TOURNAMENT" in Las Vegas during October 23-30, 2005. Please notice that the emphasis is on FUN! This is not a "win at all costs" type event. Yes, it it competitive, but the rules for this tournament prohibit unscrupulous teams/managers from taking unfair advantage of almost any situation. As long as you have played any form of organized baseball (hardball) during your lifetime, you have the minimum experience required to pre-register for this tournament. These tournaments will involve a total of 20-24 teams. Each team will usually have only 11 or 12 players, which means lots of "at-bats" and defensive playing time for everyone. (Everyone is always in the batting order and everyone plays defense as required by the rules.) Additional player draftees (volunteers selected to play on more than one team) and emergency back-up players from other teams will be utilized to insure against forfeits. Please read the Addendum to the Rules for clarification concerning player borrowing and/or sharing. Registration will be on a first-come, first-served basis. Each team will play only one game per day, and games in the 2005 tournament will be played at 8:30 AM and Noon daily. That will insure plenty of free time every afternoon and evening in Las Vegas for added fun and excitement. Also, each team will be guaranteed a minimum of 5 games (Monday through Friday). All teams will be entered in a semi-final playoff game (their fifth game on Friday) at their appropriate competitive level. Winning teams from semi-final action will play a sixth game on Saturday for their specific championship level. The daily tournament schedule (pool play) will be set up each evening for the following day after each day's scores have been recorded, and then the schedule will be posted for the next day's action. In other words, this will be a tournament within a tournament. No other national tournament treats all of its teams (and especially individual players) in such a fair and equitable manner. Since most teams entering the tournament cannot be absolutely sure about their appropriate competitive level before the tournament begins, the results of each day's games will influence which teams will play against each other on each subsequent day. Therefore, each team earns its appropriate competitive level by the time they reach the playoffs. In a 16-team tournament (the largest preferred size), the top 4 teams will be placed in the AAAA playoffs (semi-finals) after 4 games, and the next 4 teams will be placed in the AAA playoffs, etc. Championship games will be scheduled for each playoff level, and each individual player on each championship level team will receive the highest individual award. Runner-ups and semi-finalists will also receive appropriate individual gifts/awards, as well. A "Pool Championship" award will be presented to the lone, undefeated team before the playoffs begin. Also, the "Horse's Rear Award" will be presented to the lone, winless team before the playoffs begin, as well. Of special note, in the 2004 tournament, the team that was the recipient of the "Horse's Rear Award" almost won the 50A championship! The AAAA champions (highest level) will also be honored with their team colors gracing this web page for the next full year. Also, the next national fun tournament souvenir shirt which is given out to all participants will also reflect and honor last year's highest level championship team's colors. Lastly, the tournament team cap that is provided each year to a returning tournament championship team in each division will be specially embroidered displaying their previous year's accomplishment in their team colors. Those championship caps are certainly worn with pride!
During the second year of the OVER 60 BASEBALL NATIONAL FUN
TOURNAMENT, the week-long event will have up to 8 teams, and the minimum age
eligibility will be 58 years old. However, the minimum age may be slightly
adjusted to insure the viability of the tournament. In future years, the minimum age requirement will
remain at 58.
HOW DO I GET ON A TEAM? CAN I REGISTER BY MYSELF?
Yes, you can register by yourself,
even if you are not actively involved in an Over 50 Baseball league or any other
younger age adult baseball league
at this time. However, 48 and over teams with active players from any
baseball league are also encouraged to enter the tournament. Most teams will be established according to regions or
cities in the United States. The tournament director will assign
individual players based upon their answers in the QUESTIONNAIRE,
especially those answers concerning what city, state, or region
they come from. All registrants will know in advance what team they'll be playing on before they
arrive in Las Vegas. In order to pre-register for this
tournament, please fill out the pre-registration QUESTIONNAIRE now. You
are under no obligation. No payments are required until the end of August,
although early-booking discounts will be available during the early summer.
Please note that payments made in September will be subject to a late registration fee. The Official Registration Form will be available only to those new
rookie participants who have pre-registered first. Tournament veterans who
do not have the Official Registration Form should request access to the form
from the National Tournament
Director.
WHICH FIELDS WILL THE GAMES BE PLAYED AT?
Games in the 2005 tournament
will be played at the finest available fields in the east and southeast Las Vegas
metro area. During the 2004 tournament, many games were played in the
suburb of Henderson, Nevada at the beautifully manicured Arroyo
Grande Athletic Complex and Burkholder Field and those facilities will be
utilized again. Although only championship games
were played at the new Las Vegas High School on their
exceptionally well-kept field prior to 2004, it is anticipated that in 2005,
additional games
will be played there. Presently, it is anticipated that
the above mentioned fields will host many of the 2005 tournament games and some
additional high-quality fields will also be used, including the spectacular
field at the Community College of Southern Nevada. Remember, almost all games
will be played at either 8:30 AM or 12 Noon, and there is a full one hour break
between games. For those participants who will play 2 games per day (see below),
the full hour break between games is most welcome. Over 50 Baseball does not cram 3 or more games on each field
every day. Also, you'll have plenty of free time in the afternoon and evening to enjoy the exciting Las Vegas
atmosphere. That's why the Over 50 Baseball National Fun Tournament is held in
the Entertainment and Gambling Capital of the World.
WILL I GET ENOUGH AT BATS AND PLAYING TIME?
Every team will be required to utilize an extended batting order. Every player present and ready to play will be placed in the batting order every day by his manager. Also, every player will have the opportunity to play defense in every "pool play" game by alternating defensive positions with teammates. In other words, each manager will utilize some form of defensive player rotation (as required by Over 50 Baseball rules) to insure that no one sits on the bench for an entire game. Please remember, this is supposed to be a "fun tournament!" Although winning is great, giving everyone a "fair shake" for the dollars spent is even greater. No other tournament treats its participants in such a fair and equitable manner.
Also, if only one game played each day is
insufficient, you will have the option to sign up and solicit yourself as an emergency substitute
player for any team (no extra charge). Since team sizes are relatively small, extra playing
opportunities do become available during the tournament week. In addition,
you can also sign up to be entered into the supplemental draft or assignment of secondary team
players. If you participate and are selected in the draft or assigned
directly by the tournament director, you'll be placed onto an additional (secondary) team. If there is a conflict of schedules during any day of the tournament
week, you will be required to play with your primary team only on that day, but
you can still volunteer as an emergency substitute for other teams on that day.
As a secondary team player, you will receive a second game jersey and
you'll be eligible for awards earned on your secondary team. The cost to
play on a secondary team is only $50 extra, which includes the cost for that second game
jersey, which is yours to keep. Tournament veterans who return each year to
play on the same secondary team and already possess that team's jersey from a
prior year, will only be charged an additional $30. If you have the
stamina to play a lot of baseball in one week, it's a great deal!
WILL FORMER EX MAJOR LEAGUE PLAYERS/MANAGERS PARTICIPATE IN THIS TOURNAMENT?
Based on a majority of responses
from surveys taken, ex major league players will not
be, in most cases, fully subsidized or compensated to participate
as players/managers in this tournament. However, if you are an ex
major league player/manager and would like to participate as
either a player, a manager, or both, please answer the specific
inquiries in the QUESTIONNAIRE. You
may be eligible to receive minor compensation.
WHAT TYPE OF AWARDS WILL BE GIVEN OUT, AND CAN I BE A MANAGER?
Also, based upon surveys, expensive awards do not appear to be that
important. If you have any ideas or suggestions concerning
specific types of individual awards, please email your opinions
and suggestions to Over 50 Baseball. Presently, the manager of an
award-winning team will receive not only an individual player
award/gift, but a team trophy as well. If you are interested in
becoming a tournament manager, you will have the opportunity to
request it within the QUESTIONNAIRE. If you have any additional
questions about team management, please
email your request to Howard, the National Director. Managers
will receive compensation for their assistance, which will
significantly help to reduce their overall tournament expenses.
Also, please note that managers are not normally responsible for
handling any monies. Managers responsibilities generally include
just field management and communication with their players.
Managers who refer a partial or an entire team receive additional
rebates. If you would like to be a manager, but you cannot refer
anybody else, you may be assigned as a manager of a tournament-created
team in your region. By the way, during 2000, 2001, 2002, and 2004, the
50A championship team was tournament-created, and the managers of
those teams didn't know many, if any of their players
prior to the tournament.
WHAT MODIFICATIONS TO THE RULES ARE BEING PLANNED TO TAKE INTO ACCOUNT THE OVER 50 BASEBALL PLAYER?
Over 50 Baseball utilizes the
National Baseball Congress Rule Book, as well as the National
Adult Baseball Association's Manager's Rule Book. In addition,
special rule addendums are implemented because of the age group
involved. The Official Addendum to the rules for the 2005 Over 50
Baseball Las Vegas "Fun Tournament" were successfully
implemented in 1999 through 2004, and they will be fine-tuned
for the 2005 tournament next October. I highly recommend that you
review these rules. They are somewhat similar to those used in
the Colorado Over 50 Baseball League. Please click on this sentence to review
the proposed Addendums to the Over 50/60 Baseball National Fun
Tournament Rules. All
rules are subject to the approval of the team managers before the
tournament begins.
ARE MEMBERS OF THE NATIONAL ADULT BASEBALL ASSOCIATION (NABA), THE MEN'S SENIOR BASEBALL LEAGUE (MSBL), THE ROY HOBBS BASEBALL ASSOC., ETC. ALLOWED TO PARTICIPATE?
Absolutely! If teams (whole or partial) or
individuals from established national baseball organizations or any
locally-organized baseball leagues wish
to enter the tournament, their fees for each individual player
will be the same as everyone else (no surcharges).
HOW DOES A PARTIAL TEAM COMPLETE ITS ROSTER?
If a partial team registers with
only 5-8 players, for example, the tournament director will help
assign players to that team until it is complete with at least 11
players. The players assigned will, in most cases, come from
geographical areas (regions, cities, etc.) near to where a
majority of players on that team come from. Also, the tournament
director will assign players to teams based upon the team's needs.
Depending upon circumstances, it may be necessary to hold a pre-tournament
draft or direct assignment of volunteer players (who desire additional
playing time) to complete some tournament teams. If such a procedure is
necessary, players entered into the draft or through direct assignment will be given the opportunity to play on more than one
tournament team for a very affordable cost (see above). When filling
out the QUESTIONNAIRE,
be sure to be as
honest and complete about your experience and playing preferences
(especially for the purposes of being assigned to a secondary team). If you complete
the pre-registration QUESTIONNAIRE now (step #1), you will then
have the opportunity to request being placed into the
selection procedure for additional playing time, which is part of completing the
OFFICIAL REGISTRATION FORM (step #2) during the summer.
IF FRIENDS OR RELATIVES WANT TO ENTER THE TOURNAMENT TOGETHER AND PARTICIPATE ON THE SAME TEAM, HOW WILL THAT BE ACCOMPLISHED?
Since teams will be established
by regions, friends will obviously be playing together on the
same team. Friends or family members who wish to
play together on the same team but live in
different regions of the U.S., should indicate their preference
by e-mail or within the Pre-Registration Questionnaire.
ARE UNIFORMS GOING TO BE PROVIDED?
A game jersey in specific team
colors with a number on the back and matching baseball cap will
be given to each player on each tournament-created team to keep
as tournament souvenirs. Complete teams (with their own uniforms)
who enter the tournament will be given a discounted price since
their players already have team uniforms and probably don't want
additional ones. Each player will be required to bring his own
baseball pants, socks (stirrups), shoes (rubber, plastic, or
steel cleats), under-sleeves, and glove. Although spikes (steel
cleats) will be allowed, players will be warned against high-leg
sliding, and sliding will not be required of players because of
the age group. Catchers should bring their own gear, if they have
it. Additional catchers' equipment will be available at all fields, but
all catchers must provide their own protective helmet while
catching. Also, all players must bring their own glove. If you
want to bring your own bat, please do so. Metal bats, as well as
wood, are acceptable. All metal bats must be marked with the
statement that they are an "official baseball bat."
Also, batting helmets will be provided at each field, but if you wish to bring
your own, you certainly may. Since teams will be established
before the tournament begins, game jerseys and tournament
souvenir shirts will be ordered to fit every participating player. Lastly,
players entering the draft (for extra playing time) and are selected, will
receive an additional game jersey for their secondary team. A small
additional cost will be collected from drafted players, and those players will
also be eligible to receive awards presented to their secondary team.
WHAT ABOUT ACCOMMODATIONS? DO I HAVE TO STAY WHERE EVERYONE ELSE DOES?
Although a recommended combined total tournament-package price which would include private accommodations is the best deal, you may stay anywhere you want. However, the tournament-only price may not be as attractive for those who purchase their own hotel rooms elsewhere, unless they are casino "high- rollers" and receive greatly discounted or "comped" accommodations. Also, if you do not stay at a tournament-recommended resort property, you may not have easy/affordable access to daily posted tournament information, results, and updated schedules. Possibly, the most important reason why you should stay at a tournament-recommended resort property is the atmosphere created by the significant number of tournament participants who are also staying there. Away from the ballfields, you'll get to meet players from all over the U.S., and you'll make a lot of new friends.
CAN I SHARE A SUITE WITH ANOTHER PARTICIPANT TO SAVE MONEY?
Yes, you certainly may! However, you'll have to find your own roommate. Over 50 Baseball does not assign strangers as roommates.
SHOULD I BRING MY SPOUSE OR A FRIEND?
Yes! Since most people love Las Vegas, what a great vacation it would be for both of you. Also, any one adult guest who is sharing a tournament-recommended resort property accommodation with a tournament participant will receive a free admission ticket to the ANNUAL TOURNAMENT BANQUET!
CAN I BRING THE KIDS?
Absolutely! However, there will be no special services available for unsupervised children of participants. Also, insurance provisions prohibit children or any other spectator from coming onto the baseball fields. Sorry, no bat-boys allowed.
ARE ANY MEALS INCLUDED?
Because of the convenience of very
affordable, quality restaurants and buffets in Las Vegas hotels and casinos,
meals will not be included. However, a top-notch buffet banquet
dinner and tournament get-together presentation (ANNUAL
TOURNAMENT BANQUET) in a private
reserved room at a Las Vegas resort will be included during the evening of the
second or third day of play. Also, a new addition
that was
proposed for the 2004 event will continue! A
special first night ALL-STAR GAME AND BASEBALL
OLYMPICS event will be held under the lights, and it is being planned for
all tournament participants.
WILL IT BE NECESSARY TO RENT A CAR?
Yes, unless you plan to share a rental car with another participant (probably a teammate). Most of the baseball fields are located throughout the east and mainly the southeast Las Vegas metro area, including Henderson, Nevada. For those of you who will need to rent a car, special low rates will be made available to Over 50 Baseball participants. During the 2004 event, many participants were able to rent a car for well under $100 (plus taxes) for the entire tournament week. Over 50 Baseball will assist you and provide the instructions for registrants to obtain the very best rates.
MOST IMPORTANTLY,
HOW MUCH WILL IT COST AND WHAT ARE THE OPTIONAL ACCOMMODATION CHOICES?
The price for tournament-only participation is $390
The above price of $390 includes not only tournament participation with umpires and liability insurance included, but tournament awards, a team game jersey and matching cap for you to keep, a ticket to the Annual Tournament Banquet, participation in the All-Star Game and/or Baseball Olympics (with awards earned), tournament commemorative shirt, and a very special and unique tournament gift. Also, for those players who do not have their own batting helmet or catcher's gear, each tournament field is provided with a full set of helmets and catching equipment for players/teams who need to utilize them.
THE PRICES FOR THE FOLLOWING RECOMMENDED TOURNAMENT-HOST PROPERTIES (Sunday to Sunday occupancy) WILL BE LISTED ON THIS WEBPAGE IN THE SPRING OF 2005
Summer Bay Resort
Summer Bay Resort (formerly Leisure Resorts) is located directly behind the Imperial Palace Hotel and Casino, with extremely close station access to the brand new Las Vegas Monorail. It is also within very easy walking distance to the famous "Las Vegas Strip" and some of the great hotel/casinos, such as Bally's, the Flamingo, Bellagio, Paris, Caesar's Palace, Harrah's, the Mirage, Treasure Island, and the Venetian. Summer Bay (an all-suite property) offers many amenities, including fully furnished kitchens in all units. Although Summer Bay Resort is an RCI (Resort Condominiums International) timeshare property, you will not be required to attend any timeshare presentations during your stay. Accommodations at Summer Bay include studio and larger full-sized one-bedroom suites. Family-sized two-bedroom suites are limited and are usually available only by special request. If you are interested in a very large suite, you should inquire directly with Over 50 Baseball. Also, please note that if multiple participants (preferably teammates) share a larger-sized suite, their overall individual tournament cost will be greatly reduced.
Fiesta Henderson Hotel & Casino
If you would prefer to stay in a hotel that has a large casino just an elevator ride away, Over 50 Baseball has contracted with The Fiesta Henderson Casino Hotel. Although this resort is not close to the Las Vegas Strip, it is located at the intersection of I-515 and I-215, and it is less than a mile from one of the best baseball fields utilized for the tournament. It's also in relatively close proximity to other tournament baseball fields and a major shopping mall in Henderson (the southeast Las Vegas metro area). Also, the Fiesta Henderson Hotel Casino is only several years old, and its casino is one of the very best gaming venues in the entire region. The payback percentages (odds) for its video poker and slots exceed the odds at almost all other casinos. Also, its food service is excellent with an outstanding and affordable buffet, as well as one of the best Mexican restaurants (Garduno's), and a 24-hour coffee shop with daily specials. The accommodations are excellent, and although in-unit kitchens and room service are not available, there are many other amenities including a swimming pool and Jacuzzi.
Are you looking for the lowest possible price and a great value? This year, Over 50 Baseball has also contracted with The Hearthside, a newly-built all-suite property located on East Flamingo Road, just east of Eastern Ave., which is only 2 miles from the center of the "Las Vegas Strip." All of the Hearthside units (one-bed studios and larger two-bed suites) have kitchens with dishes and utensils plus other fine amenities, and each of the 3-story buildings has indoor hallways with elevators and laundry facilities. Please note, however, that although the resort has an exercise room, it doesn't have a swimming pool. Also, since the resort does not provide daily housekeeping services, complimentary towel exchanges and bathroom amenity re-supply may be done at the front desk whenever necessary. Since the largest-sized Hearthside suites have two queen beds with more floor space (including a sofa-sleeper sitting area), they will be offered only to those participants who will need a two or three bed unit. This "double-queen" sized suite, when shared by 3 tournament participants, is the absolutely lowest-priced accommodation available.
1 queen bed studio suite large 2-bed suite with sofa-sleeper
This tournament is designed to provide you an affordable opportunity to play baseball for almost a full week in quality ball parks (somewhat similar to a "fantasy camp"), without the requirement of belonging to any national baseball organization or even an established team. If necessary, you'll be assigned to the most appropriate regional team for your tournament experience.
Even if you cannot attend the tournament this year,
answering the PRE-REGISTRATION QUESTIONNAIRE will
put you on the mailing list for future events. You are under no obligation if you
fill out and submit the form. Please remember that the above
tournament-only price is subject to change until payments are received by Over
50 Baseball during the summer of 2005. Lastly, airfare to and
from Las Vegas is not included in the package price, but recommendations for discount airfare will be
provided, if requested.
ARE THERE ANY DISCOUNTS?
Yes! Managers receive a very special discount for their services. Also, if you refer other brand new rookie participants, you will receive a $10 discount for each player referred, whether they play with you on your team or not. To encourage players you refer to place your name on their registration forms as the referrer, they will each receive a $5 discount. In order to qualify for the referral discount, applicants must indicate by name who the referrer is within the PRE-REGISTRATION QUESTIONNAIRE form now and confirm the same information when you complete the Official Registration Form during the summer of 2005. Managers and/or referrers of any new players (who do not have Internet access) should submit the QUESTIONNAIRE for those players by using their own email address for communication and registration purposes and then continue to provide a communicative link for all further tournament information.
Do you have a friend, relative, co-worker, etc. who has an email address and might be interested in attending the next tournament? Wouldn't it be great if you could play on the same team together? Just click on the "Send Page to friend" button directly below!
