University Committee on Animal Care

Policy on Training

The University Committee on Animal Care (UCAC) determined that all faculty, staff, students and volunteers wishing to use animals
in research and teaching at ETSU are required (no exceptions) to attend an Orientation for Users of Animals, including a tour of the animal housing facilities before they can use/handle animals.

Training requirements for visitors wishing to use or handle animals for research and/or teaching at ETSU will be determined
individually by the UCAC.
Determining factors for training requirements of visitors at ETSU will be previous experience, length
of stay and level of involvement in an animal study protocol at ETSU.

Revised by the University Committee on Animal Care on February 21, 2003.

Orientation for Users of Animals

Orientation classes are held several times per year. All sessions begin at 1:30 PM and are approximately 3 hours in length, including the tour.
You must attend the entire session for credit and to work with animals. Facility tours are to familiarize you with animal housing and use locations,
DLAR services, proper behavior in the animal facility, plus safe and humane animal handling techniques. One on one training can be arranged
by appointment for specific techniques in restraint, handling, injections, etc. One on one training appointments will not be arranged as an
alternative to tours the day of orientation. Please call the DLAR office at 439-6292 to register for an orientation session or for more information.
