Water
As with electricity and gas, water services are provided by the private
sector and unlike gas and electricity, water companies do not have to
compete for domestic customers. In Northern Ireland services remain in
the public sector.
To ensure a high standard of service from all of the companies the industry
is regulated in three key areas;
• Costs to Consumers
• The Environment
• Quality of Drinking Water
The Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs - Defra -are responsible
for all aspects of water policy in England and Wales. In Scotland this
is the Scottish Executive and in Northern Ireland the industry is overseen
by the Water Services.
