  WMO Voluntary Cooperation Programme

The WMO Voluntary Cooperation Programme (VCP) provides support to member countries - at their request - in the form of equipment, services and training. This support is volunteered by WMO members. Some major projects are supported through direct financing by a number of members.

The UK, through the Met Office, actively supports VCP and works closely with other national met. services around the world to:

  • Improve protection of life and property from the effects of natural disasters
  • Rapidly restore the life-critical services provided by NMSs whose countries have been affected by natural disasters, or are emerging from conflict.
  • Improve understanding of the effects of global climate change by taking new climate observations
  • Archiving existing records of countries which cannot support these activities themselves.

These outcomes will be achieved by:

  • Building technological capacity of NMSs in developing countries to enable them to provide direct services
  • Development of human resources in NMSs
  • Institutional development of NMSs
  • Improving the telecommunications for NMSs
  • Support for climate observations, especially in small island developing states
  • Rolling out climate database management systems into developing countries
  • Supporting climate data rescue initiatives in developing countries
  • Restoration of life-critical services by NMSs.
