Some
of the TOP Hotels in Bali
Bali's
most famous and crowded resort is Kuta beach, a six-kilometre
sweep of golden sand, with plenty of accommodation,
shops and nightlife. Nearby Sanur is much quieter, but
most backpackers prefer the beaches of peaceful east-coast
Candi Dasa and traveller-oriented Lovina on the north
coast. The island's other major destination is the cultural
centre of Ubud , a still charming but undeniably commercialized
overgrown village, where traditional dances are staged
every night of the week and the streets are full of
arts-and-crafts galleries.

Islam
is the predominant religion in Riau (1,335,000 out of
1,370,000). This province is also a very rich ethnographic
area. Its many tribes include: the Sakai in Muara Basung
and Bengkalis, numbering about 5000. The Laut or Kuala
in Sungai Asam, about 600; and in Senajang, Batam, Singkep,
Santan, and Daik number about 5000. The Hutan or Asli
in Sokop Sungai Pulau, Bengkalis District, number about
3000. The Akik People in Pangkalan Baru on Rupat Island,
Bengkalis District, number about 2000. The Talang Mamak
in Kaleso, Indragiri Hulu District, number around 6000.
Of the Bonai in Kuala Kemper, Kepenuhan; and in Tanah
Putih, Kampar District there are about 1500 left. The
Mantang in Penuba and Kelumu, are of unknown numbers.
The Baruk People in Sungai Buluh and Singkep, also of
unknown numbers. Chinese, forming about 1/5 of the total
population of the Riau, are concentrated on Billiton
and Bangka. Originally settled in these districts to
work the mines and plantations, they later became farmers
and fishermen when the mines played out. On Bangka the
Chinese have mixed considerably with the local culture
and the Chinese here speak an almost creolized Hakka
dialect.
