Kabanjahe
Some
of the TOP Hotels in Bali
Bali's
most famous and crowded resort is Kuta beach, a six-kilometre
sweep of golden sand, with plenty of accommodation,
shops and nightlife. Nearby Sanur is much quieter, but
most backpackers prefer the beaches of peaceful east-coast
Candi Dasa and traveller-oriented Lovina on the north
coast. The island's other major destination is the cultural
centre of Ubud , a still charming but undeniably commercialized
overgrown village, where traditional dances are staged
every night of the week and the streets are full of
arts-and-crafts galleries.

Kabanjahe
Rp50 by public taxi 11 km south of Brastagi. The capital
city of Karoland where the bupati's office is. Brastagi
is more scenic, more central, and has better accommodation
than Kabanjahe. Visit the marketplace. Change money
at Bank 1946. vicinity of Kabanjahe: A 52 year old painter,
Rugun Sembiring, works in Kampung Kabanjahe, 1 % km
from Kabanjahe. See his giant painting of refugees fleeing
during the Revo/usl, looks like a basrelief! He loves
blazing yellow. A fine man with whom you can practice
your Indonesian while kampung kids sit in the doorway.
Lau Simomo: A leper colony 8 km from Kabanjahe that
was begun by a Dutch missionary. Report to the doctor
in charge first. mawas center: From Kabanjahe hire a
landrover for about Rp10,000 between several people
and travel 4 hours through smothering jungle and over
hills to the Orangutan Rehabilitation Center at Ketembe.
Pematang Purba: This 200 year old village 1 hour's drive
from Kabanjahe is worth visiting for its unique Simalungun
houses of tribal chiefs. Take the regular bus from Kabanjahe
to Siantar, then about half way between these two points
get off at Pematang Purba which is only 100 m from the
highway. See the ancient courthouse, tall thatched Sumatran
roofs, rice barns, palace longhouse.
