TARAKAN

Some of the TOP Hotels in Bali

Bali's most famous and crowded resort is Kuta beach, a six-kilometre sweep of golden sand, with plenty of accommodation, shops and nightlife. Nearby Sanur is much quieter, but most backpackers prefer the beaches of peaceful east-coast Candi Dasa and traveller-oriented Lovina on the north coast. The island's other major destination is the cultural centre of Ubud , a still charming but undeniably commercialized overgrown village, where traditional dances are staged every night of the week and the streets are full of arts-and-crafts galleries.

An oil island surrounded by hills. Storage tanks, which Indonesian tourist booklets describe as 'enchanting', gleam in the sun. It's so damn hot in this town, every shop shuts at midday. The market is worth exploring with lots of East Malaysian goods. getting there: Take boats either from Samarinda (Rp8000) in Kalimantan or else from Tawau in Sabah, East Malaysia, where there are 5 regular boats to Nunukan (north of Tarakan) leaving daily around midday. Buy a ticket at the Nunukan Express Office in Tawau before 10 am for M$10 (US$4). From Nunukan to Tarakan the fare is Rp2000 with one good meal onboard. This boat leaves Nunukan about 4 pm and gets to Tarakan at dawn. transport: The basic transport is old jeeps, Rp40 to anywhere in town. Get one from the wharf when you first arrive in Kampung Bugis where many of the cheap losmens are. stay: Try crashing in the messes of the foreign oil companies. Most losmens are Rp750, but Losmen Jakarta is the cheapest at Rp500 and serves Rp300 meals. Food is expensive in most restaurants, Rp500 for a decent meal. Sahabat, JI. Sudarso, has some excellent dishes. vicinity of Tarakan: All along its coast are polluted mangrove swamps but this small island has some difficult to get to, uncontaminated white sand beaches on the ocean side.
