Some
of the TOP Hotels in Bali
Bali's
most famous and crowded resort is Kuta beach, a six-kilometre
sweep of golden sand, with plenty of accommodation,
shops and nightlife. Nearby Sanur is much quieter, but
most backpackers prefer the beaches of peaceful east-coast
Candi Dasa and traveller-oriented Lovina on the north
coast. The island's other major destination is the cultural
centre of Ubud , a still charming but undeniably commercialized
overgrown village, where traditional dances are staged
every night of the week and the streets are full of
arts-and-crafts galleries.

These
tribesmen are the original inhabitants of Borneo who
even preceed the Dayaks. Very elusive aboriginals, the
Punans run when they smell you coming. About 10,000
are left in scattered isolated pockets. Some groups
have been farming for about 5 years. Wizards in jungle
craft and masters of the terrain, the Punans don't eat
rice but live off fruit and wild berries, hunt game
with blowpipes (when they fire a dart, they don't miss),
and even use packs of hunting dogs to kill wild boar.
These nomadic hunters can shoot rapids in canoes while
standing up. Their features are more Mongolian than
the Dayaks' and the Dayaks consider them savages. They
are very superstitious, into the ways of panthers and
wild boars. You could see them come down to the villages
to barter boar tusk necklaces, panther teeth and skins,
bear claws, deer horns, monkey gall bladders, snake
stones, orangutan skulls and other natural produce for
salt and tobacco (they all smoke like mad). getting
there: Punans are found upriver from Berau and Balungan
in the hinterlands of the Tabang subdistrict and on
the Kayan from Tarakan in Peso and Lesan subdistricts;
in Longpalay, Longbanuium, Longsuku, Berau District,
they number about 500. They are also found on the Bahau
River near the Giram Baleo river gorge (a fierce current
running through a deep central channel) and over the
hills of these forests. Punans also inhabit the areas
west of Longkemuat, Longbenato, Longpeliran and in Batumesjid,
Muara Ancalong Subdistrict, numbering in all about 2000.
It's better if you arrange to go with a government party,
they could be defensively hostile. They are fearless
because, they don't know any better. One group still
lives a mesolithic existence in a stone cave, the Stone
Punan.
