Mountain villages

Some of the TOP Hotels in Bali

Bali's most famous and crowded resort is Kuta beach, a six-kilometre sweep of golden sand, with plenty of accommodation, shops and nightlife. Nearby Sanur is much quieter, but most backpackers prefer the beaches of peaceful east-coast Candi Dasa and traveller-oriented Lovina on the north coast. The island's other major destination is the cultural centre of Ubud , a still charming but undeniably commercialized overgrown village, where traditional dances are staged every night of the week and the streets are full of arts-and-crafts galleries.

From Sumbawa Besar, visit Rarak and Lawang about 2'% hours walk. Take the narrow rutted road which winds its way into the island's interior mountains to the southwest. Old Dutch stone posts mark the kilometers as far as Kayu Sengkal, 24 km up in the high foothills. The road slowly climbs towards the pinnacle of Sumbawa's western peninsula, the twin peaks of the Batu Lante Mountains. Catch glimpses of the Flores Sea 300 m below. Closely clustered villages are found in this area. Hear the musical rhythmic thumping of women working the rice boat (rantok) and beating thistles. In the evenings during the monotonous chore of threshing they sing humerous or nostalgic verses to alleviate the work. These villages are closed up tightly at dusk for fear of set an (bad spirits). On Sumbawa, as in many of the backwater regions of Indonesia, witchcraft is rampant.
