Technology is a wonderful thing. There are new software packages being introduced everyday that may enhance the effectiveness of your small business. While it can be fun and exciting to try new software, choose carefully when buying in order to avoid unnecessary expense.

Many of the newer computers are faster and able to accomplish more, in less time. The most important thing to consider when purchasing a new small business software program is whether or not you will actually use it. What I mean is that just because something is a good idea in general does not necessarily mean that it is a good idea for you and your small business.
Case in point; As a writer I long for a piece of writing software called Dramatica Pro. This software is pretty expensive and while it would help me immensely, it would be of little benefit to say, a bookkeeper or a florist. Alternatively, I have little use for architectural software or accounting software. Knowing your needs and your projected outcome is essential.

Many of the software packages marketed to small business owners offer an all inclusive program; one that does everything from tracking your time to paying your bills. While that may be a need for some, others will have little use for all of these bells and whistles. It is important to find the software that enhances your small business by providing the most help with the smallest disk space usage.
If you have a number of contacts, a good word processor is essential, but if you make yard art to sell at a flea market, then you may have more need for a good spread sheet program that will track supplies and inventory or sales. Someone who has employees may need both of the above and payroll or accounting software in order to keep their business flowing smoothly. That is why it is important to know what you will be using your computer for before go shopping for new programs.

The most important thing to remember about software is that it is a tool and like any tool, it won't do you any good if you don't use it.
I have in my shed outside, a hammer, a saw, wood and nails for a deck , but I don't have a deck because I'm afraid to use the saw and the last thing I hammered was my thumb. My point? That I have all of the ingredients for a fine deck, but until I gain the knowledge and the confidence to use these tools and materials correctly, I will not have the finished product that I desire. It is the same with most things in life; including computer programs.
You must learn how to use the programs in order for them to be effective for you. This will take some time, but it; like the software, is an investment in your business.
