Submission to Inktomi
It seems we are entering a time of big changes in search engine marketing. During the 2 last years Google was "the only show in town". Actually, it still IS. Most people have been using Google to find information in the Internet. Most likely, you are using Google, even if you think you are not. Are you using Yahoo? AOL? Then you are using Google because Google delivers search results for Yahoo, AOL, as well as many other portals.
Until 2001, there were several search engines on the market, and the percentages of people using them were pretty equal. I remember a technique which was pretty popular at that time when SEO experts created several version of the same page: one page was optimized especially for Alta Vista, another one for Excite, a third one for FAST, etc. But within the last two years the phrase "search engine optimization" actually meant "search engine optimization for Google".
But times change. Google has stopped playing solo, and now it’s time for the whole orchestra again. I want you to look at one search engine, Inktomi very seriously.
MSN is one the biggest Internet portals. MSN Search used to deliver LookSmart result as the primary result and Inktomi as secondary. But last October MSN announced that they were not going to renew their contract with LookSmart in 2004. And although there has been no official announcement from MSN or Inktomi yet, it seems MSN Search has already started delivering Inktomi results as their primary result.
Although, it is still delivering LookSmart results for local mirrors of MSN. If you search at http://search.msn.com, web sites in search result will be labeled as "Web Pages" (result from Inktomi). Now search with the same term at Canadian MSN (http://ca.search.msn.com) and you will receive a different result, and pages will be labeled as "Web Directory Site" (result from LookSmart). But it is only temporary, we think. It’s just impossible to switch the whole system within a day.
But not only delivering the primary result for MSN makes Inktomi important. In December 2002 Inktomi was bought by Yahoo! And even if Yahoo! is still using Google search technology, there is a rumor that they are going to switch to Inktomi pretty soon. People notice that currently Yahoo happens to show Inktomi result for short periods of time, and then switches everything back to Google’s result. It seems like the process of testing is going on.
If you have already realized how important it is for your web site to be included in Inktomi’s index, it’s time to go ahead and submit your web site to this search engine. Inktomi doesn’t deliver free submission service. You have to pay a flat fee for your web site to be included. The submission cost is $39 a year for first page, and $25 a year per each additional page.
After submission, within 3 days Inktomi adds your content to its search index and refreshes it every 48 hours.
Submission to Inktomi is available exclusively through these and a few other Inktomi authorized resellers listed below:
NumaTek Web Design doesn’t submit web sites to Inktomi. The reason we don’t do this is because the submission requires your credit card information. If you would like to submit your web site to Inktomi, you can do it clicking on the links above.
