Radio controlled models have come a long way in the past few years with micro technology making just about any sized aircraft, boat or car RC ready. These models can come in RTF (ready to fly or float), RTR (ready to run), ARF (almost ready to fly or float) or ARR (almost ready to run) formats, depending on your skill level.
Remote controlled aircraft are now becoming more compact and lightweight; as a result more and more models are being powered by micro electric motors.
Modern electric powered RC aircraft have more powerful and smaller motors, light- weight batteries and more durable airframes, making today's radio controlled electric model helicopters and airplanes perform much like their gas powered counterparts. The benefits of electric R/C flight are tremendous; the silent motors on electric model aircraft also allow flight in more places such as local parks without disturbing local residents.
In the past, RC models required gas motors to have adequate power to perform well. Electric powered remote control aircraft needed to carry heavier batteries, and the batteries did not last long, so flights were short.
However, gas or nitro powered remote controlled models are far from extinct! New and stronger alloys have introduced long lasting, fuel efficient and easier starting engines. Gas powered cars and trucks can travel speeds exceeding 50 MPH, have electric or pull start engines, and produce well over 1Hp in some cases, making your RC car, remote controlled truck or R/C boat rival the real thing! |
