Rio de Janerio certainly brings to mind some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. But Rio isn't just about sun worshipping. There is also a vibrant culture and wonderful landscape to explore. First discovered by the Portuguese in 1502, Rio de Janeiro had by the 18th century become an import port. Today it is a modern buzzing city of around 7 million people. And though it has more than its fair share of problems it still is an exciting destination with a variety of sites to keep you interested.
The beaches of Rio de Janeiro are infamous. Going to the beach for the inhabitants' is more then something you do once in a while it is a lifestyle. The most well known of the Rio beaches are Copacabana and Ipanema but there are many other smaller and less crowded beaches if you want to find them. Copacabana has endless activity with constant crowds of people swimming, sunning and playing. The beach is three miles longs and bordered by luxury hotels and mosaic pavements. Copacabana doesn't get any quieter at night, when it covering in people eating, singing, people watching and drinking. Ipanema is less active and less crowded. It is also a lot cleaner and safer as in as far as the crowds that head here.
