ETSU opens new pediatric sleep study clinic

Wednesday, February 16, 2005

JOHNSON CITY - It may be more than just fear of the dark that is keeping many kids from getting a good night's sleep.

That's according to Dr. Ricky Mohon, a pediatric pulmonologist/critical care specialist who has opened a new pediatric sleep study clinic that will diagnose sleep disorders in children and teenagers.

"Sleep disorders are extremely common in kids and the causes of these problems are often different than those affecting adults," said Mohon, an associate professor of Pediatrics at East Tennessee State University's James H. Quillen College of Medicine.

"This clinic will be unique because all tests will be scheduled, evaluated, and interpreted by a board-certified pediatric pulmonologist."

According to Mohon, sleep disorders in children, such as primary and habitual snoring, sleep walking, apnea, near-miss SIDS and abnormal insomnias, can be attributable to many issues, including attention deficit disorder, cranial/facial abnormalities, hyperactivity or seizure disorders.

"Often, the problem with sleep is a result of a more serious concern," Mohon explained.

Referrals from pediatricians, primary care physicians and other specialists can be arranged by calling (423) 439-7320.
