A winter storm blanketed the Northeast on Thursday, forcing the federal government and schools around the region to close early and triggering a spate of accidents during the afternoon rush hour.

Snow fell from Ohio to Maryland on Thursday, dumping up to 6 inches, while rain and thunderstorms some bearing hail developed across the Carolinas, Florida and Texas. Rain also was reported over New Mexico.
