Prague thanks to it's cultural heritage is one of the nicest towns in Europe. Apart of some other big towns in Europe Prague was saved from damages caused by wars in the last centuries. It is one of the reasons why they remained so good preserved. Also under the communist regime there were not many new buildings build. (Marksmen's Island) Strelecky ostrov

Description:	The Marksmenś Island was the originaly possesion of the Convent of Jihannits and latter on of the chemist Augustino during the 14th cent. From the 1472 the Island was used as the practise shooting-ground of the Old Town marksmen(hence its name). Prague military corps used the Island for the same purposes also in later periods. In 1812 a restaurant building was constructed for theCorps of Prague Sharpshooters after a plan by j.Zoebel in the south corner of the Island. In 1882 the Island was the scene of the 1st Sokol festival, organized by the Sokol physical culture association under the supervision of Miroslav Tyrš(who has also a memorial table there). On 1 May 1890 the working poeple of Prague held the first MAy Day manifestation in the Czech lands here(also a memorial tablet). Popular meetings were repeated here on the occasions of the May Day celebrations until the outbreak of the First WOrld WAr. The Island was harmfully demaged by the floods in 2002, but was renoved soon afterwards.
