Briefing on
the Yangtze River Cruises

Of 80 all kinds of ships, around 20 modern, comfortable cabin cruisers ply the waters of the Yangtze through the 120-mile long three gorges from spring through fall, traveling downstream from Chongqing to Wuhan over three nights, or from Chongqing to Yichang in two nights. Cruiser also sail upstream from Wuhan to Chongqing in four nights, or from Yichang to Chongqing in three nights. Passing through the narrow and meandering passages of Qutang, Wu and Xiling gores is a breathtaking experience.

If you so wish, smaller boats will carry you through the Lesser Three Gorges of the Daning River, or Shennong Stream, tow tributaries of the Yangtze. Shore excursions to the ancient towns of Wanxian, Shibaozhai, Fengdu, Yichang and Jingzhou reveal both the richness of local history and the colorfulness of life along this sector of the Yangtze.

You will see social history: ships still unloaded by strings of men carrying loads on their backs. If you go up the Daning River or Shennong Stream, you might see Tujia Men pulling boats upstream with shoulder harnesses and chanting in the old way. Some work nude if they don't expect tourists.

The Yangtze river is a busy highway. Except for a few short sections, there has been no other road along the river between Yichang and Chongqing.

Now some cruise ships actually sail from Chongqing to Nanjing and Shanghai.

The constructing Yangtze Three Gorges Project (TGP) will surely have some impact on the Yangtze River cruise scenery and itineraries. Check more details about this topic.
