Mini guide to Colorado Springs
With its privileged position amid the breathtaking scenery of the Rocky Mountains, it is unsurprising that Colorado Springs has always been a popular tourist destination.
The town is known first and foremost for the many spectacular natural attractions that surround it. Pike’s Peak is regarded as one of the most exquisite mountains in the entire Rocky Mountains range, and the view from its summit is nothing short of stupendous. The western slopes of the mountain are devoted to Mueller State Park, which has almost 90kms of nature trails with spectacular scenery, along which walking, biking and horseback riding are permissible. There are also a number of campsites within the park.
Pike’s Peak is also the site of the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, which combines more than 650 animals with panoramic mountain scenery. The animals housed here include over 30 endangered species, such as the Amur tiger, the Mexican wolf, and the Black-footed ferret.
The Garden of the Gods is a fascinating natural attraction made up of colossal, bizarrely shaped red sandstone outcrops and overhangs as well as jagged, jutting spires. Interspersed with these rocky wonders are exquisite forested areas with abundant wildlife and a multitude of nature trails to explore.
Colorado Springs has an interesting assortment of unusual museums, including the Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame, covering the history of the sport and filled with related paraphernalia and multimedia displays. The Ghost Town Museum, set in the historic Colorado Midland railroad structure, is a fun and accurate re-creation of the Old West, where you can pop into a saloon, visit the town jail, or pan for gold.
At the May Natural History Museum, thousands of giant and exotic insects are showcased; while the Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum documents the historical development of the region. Additionally, Colorado Springs, despite its country setting, is an extremely modern town, encompassing a wide range of accommodation and dining options.
