Exploring France

France is a large, diverse and beautiful country, perfect for car hire. Coast or hinterland, each region has a unique appeal.

The Loire Valley has a fairy tale appeal to it, full of lavish chateaux – remnants of a belle epoch period between the 15th and 18th centuries. The best example is perhaps Château de Chambord.

Burgundy is a delightful patchwork of vineyards, sunflower fields and ‘impressionist’ haystacks. The tiny walled town of Vézelay, is a timeless heritage spot, with a Basilica dating from the 9th century.

The lovely countryside and little villages of the Dordogne are a popular annual retreat for many Europeans, centred around Sarlat - a lovely Renaissance town with distinctive medieval appearance.

Savoy and the Alpine region are enjoyable and beautiful in winter and summer. Chamonix lies in one of its most spectacular valleys and is dominated by ski fields and the lofty peak of Mont Blanc (Europe’s highest). Annecy is a fantastic summer destination located at the end of a picturesque lake, with a medieval, old quarter.

Along the Cote D’Azure are endless towns to suit all levels of society. Antibes, with its fantastic beaches and cluster of hotels, is popular with locals. Cannes is upmarket and famous for its annual film festival, Saint Tropez is a nice place to visit for a few hours but ruinously expensive to stay in.

Avignon is an historic town, once the seat of the papacy during 15th century upheavals in Rome, and the main centre of the lovely, laid back Provence region. Arles, on the Grand Rhône river, has a fine Roman history and architecture to match.

There are many pleasant seaside towns along the Atlantic coast but Biarritz, near the Spanish border, is probably the most popular. Created in 1967, the Pyrenees national park stretches for about 100kms along the French-Spanish border with hundreds of high-altitude lakes and impressive peaks.

The rugged beauty of Brittany, facing the channel, is unique. St Malo is the area’s busiest town with some inspiring 11th century buildings. From here many visit the unmissbale Isle d'Ouessant and Mont Saint Michel.
