Mini guide to Halifax
Halifax is a bustling town steeped in history and surrounded by the wild beauty of Yorkshire. From historic buildings to markets and nightlife, Halifax can suit anyone’s taste. Eureka! the museum for children is one of Halifax’s most popular attractions and is the first of its kind designed for children up to the age of 12. Throughout the museum you can touch, listen and smell, as well as look. Step inside a giant mouth or go shopping in a mini Marks & Spencer; Eureka! is a thrill. Bankfield Museum is a 19th century mansion housing a large costume and textile collection, as well as military memorabilia and fine art displays. The Piece Hall Art Gallery, built in 1779 as a cloth hall, now houses contemporary exhibitions. The 15th century Halifax Parish Church contains masonry of the original Norman church, including distinctive Norman chevrons. Halifax has a wide variety of international restaurants to tempt your palate, including British, Indian and Asian food. Halifax also boasts excellent nightlife: take your pick of the town’s nightclubs, bars, pubs and theatres. The best shopping can be found at the Borough Market in a splendid Victorian market hall, giving the visitor a delightfully unique shopping experience. Take a daytrip out of town and you will discover some pleasant surprises. Only half a mile away in Boothtown is the Halifax dry ski slope, where you can ski indoors. Alternatively, drive through picturesque landscape to explore the art galleries and cathedral in the lovely town of Bradford. Halifax is serviced by excellent rail and coach lines, and is only a short drive away from Leeds airport. For motorists, the city is just north of Junction 24 of the M62, and can be reached by rail from many of the nearby centers in Yorkshire as well as hourly trains from London Kings Cross station, changing in Leeds (3 hour duration).
