About Whistler, BC

A Brief History
Click to view Whistler Videos The Whistler area was originally named Alta Lake. In 1960 a group of Vancouver businessmen went looking for a site to develop for their bid to host the 1968 Winter Olympics. They were guided here to London Mountain, known locally as Whistler Mountain because of all the whistling marmots on its' flanks. That Olympic bid was unsuccessful, but Whistler as both a winter and summer resort, has flourished. After being re-named, Whistler Mountain officially opened on February 15, 1966 and the rest as we say is history.

Winter Activities
Whistler Mountain snowboarding With over two million visitors, two years in a row Whistler has been named the #1 destination ski resort in North America. Our two mountains, Whistler and Blackcomb, give skiers and boarders access to over 7,000 acres of prime mountain terrain to enjoy. The average snowfall is 360 inches or 30 feet per year at the summit level. Our average alpine temperatures are between -12c and -5c.

Tired of the slopes and want to find more adventure? How about snowmobiling, snowshoeing, dog sledding, cross-country skiing, snowcat tours or sleigh rides? There are plenty of activities for all ages and skier and non-skiers alike!

Summer Activities
Whistler has quickly become recognized as a true four season's playground. With four destination golf resorts to choose from, Whistler was named in the top 20 Golf Destinations in the world by Golf Digest. As a former tour player myself, I can guarantee that you'll be pleasantly surprised. LET'S PLAY!

The Whistler area is full of summer activities like mountain biking, hiking, rock-climbing, windsurfing, horseback riding, canoeing, whitewater-rafting, camping, sightseeing/nature tours and much much more.

Kid Friendly
Whistler welcomes you and your children! There are lots of activities specifically designed for kids. Whistler and Blackcomb Mountains have great kids camps that offer ski lessons and supervised fun for the day or week. On Blackcomb Mountain kids can play in the adventure playground hidden in a magical winter forest.

In the summer time there's biking trails, a skateboard park, playgrounds, lakes for swimming and much much more!

Shopping
Shopping and Dining... Whistler Style! Whistler's unique and picturesque Villages have cobblestone paths that lead through several blocks of charming retail shops with everything from local merchants selling their arts and crafts to all the latest ski gear as well as internationally recognized shops like Starbucks, the GAP and Eddy Bauer.

Dining
Whistler is an international crossroads for dining where culinary fare from all corners of the world can be found. There are restaurants which specialize in the cooking of specific regions of France, Italy and the Mediterranean but you can find Thai, Indian, Japanese, Chinese, Mexican and Greek cuisine. Many of Whistlers' finest chefs are contributing to a modern Pacific West Coast style of cooking, fusing Asian or European influences with fresh fish, game and produce indigenous to British Columbia. Whistlers' restaurants have earned national and international awards for their menus and they've won just as many accolades for their fabulous wine cellars. LET'S ENJOY!
