NOAA image of USA weather map for March 1, 2005. USA WINTER—IT’S NOT OVER UNTIL IT’S OVER
Just as February storms out and March comes blowing in, the U.S. was hit with another dose of winter reality. Meteorologists at the NOAA National Weather Service see the national picture as a tale of two coasts. This week the parched Pacific Northwest and arid Florida will get some precipitation while parts of the mid-Atlantic and Northeast were battered by a late season nor'easter. "Rain and snow this week across western portions of Washington and Oregon is good news for this region, as it should put a temporary brake on deteriorating drought conditions," said Douglas LeComte, drought specialist at the NOAA Climate Prediction Center. "The bad news is that the precipitation amounts are forecast to be fairly light east of the Cascade Mountains, resulting in little change in the drought situation for the rest of the Pacific Northwest and into Montana."

NORTH AMERICAN COUNTRIES REACH CONSENSUS ON EL NIÑO DEFINITION — NOAA announced that the NOAA National Weather Service, the Meteorological Service of Canada and the National Meteorological Service of Mexico have reached a consensus on an index and definitions for El Niño and La Niña events (also referred to as the El Niño Southern Oscillation or ENSO). Canada, Mexico and the United States all experience impacts from El Niño and La Niña.

Image of the Greenland Environmental Observatory at Summit in the Arctic where scientists work to monitor the ozone layer. SCIENTISTS BRAVE BRUTAL ELEMENTS ON TOP OF THE WORLD TO STUDY OZONE LAYER — Doing cutting-edge science in one of Earth's most challenging environments requires meticulous planning and years of experience and education, but sometimes a smidgen of serendipity helps. That kind of "just-in-time" good fortune may well allow NOAA scientists to study an unusual thinning of the Arctic ozone layer that has started as the sunlight returns to the Arctic.

NOAA Research Harvests a Sustainable Way to Farm the Deep Blue

NOAA image of FSV (Fisheries Survey Vessel) Oscar Dyson being launched Oct. 17, 2003, at the VT Halter Marine shipyard in Moss Point, Miss. NOAA'S NEW FISHERIES SURVEY VESSEL TO EMBARK ON MAIDEN VOYAGE — NOAA's newest ship, Oscar Dyson, is on its maiden voyage and is scheduled to transit the Panama Canal. Oscar Dyson is NOAA's first newly constructed fisheries survey vessel in more than 25 years. The transit is a significant milestone for NOAA and its fleet modernization program. This series of ships will greatly expand the capabilities of the existing NOAA fleet by meeting specific data collection requirements of NOAA Fisheries and enabling scientists aboard to study fish without affecting their behavior.
