The AltaVista Directory contains editor-reviewed Web sites organized into subject categories. Use the Directory when you are interested in a certain subject but don't know exactly what you're looking for, or when you want to see top-quality sites for a subject. The Directory is a relatively small collection. If you can't find something in the Directory, try a Web search.
Browsing the directory
When you select a category link, AltaVista shows you the following:
- A "breadcrumb" search thread (Home > Category > Subcategory). This shows you where you are in your browse process and lets you return to higher-level categories.
- A list of subcategories. You can click these categories to explore deeper into your subject.
- A list of Web sites for the current category. Human editors have chosen these as the best in the Web for each specific category.
Searching the directory
You can search the directory in two ways:
- Click on a given category and type a query into the Directory search box. By default, you will search only in the category you selected. You can click the radio button in the search box to search the "Entire Directory."
- Click on the Directory tab in a Web, Image, Audio, Video or News search. This will search the entire Directory.
Directory search tips
- To require multiple words, use AND (Example: dogs AND cats).
- To require a phrase, put it in quotes (Example: "peanut butter").
- To exclude a word, use NOT (Example: dogs NOT cats).
