Serving Sizes

2 pounds of king crab will serve 2 to 3 people easily if you're serving with additional entrees. If you're having a crab feast or are serving a group of crab lovers, 5 pounds would be good for 3 people.

Storing and Thawing

King crab arrives in the form of frozen legs and claws. Frozen king crab can be kept in a freezer for several months due to it's protective glaze. To thaw king crab, place it in the refrigerator a day prior to cooking it. Left-over king crab should be kept under refrigeration and used within a couple of days.

Size and Count

Fisherman's Express has always opted to offer jumbo leg and claw sizes for their quality and meat content. Legs and claws average between 1/2 pound to 2/3 pound each.

is located in the Bering Sea in the North Pacific Ocean. It is known for it's high seas and terrible weather. Many of the Bristol Bay crab fishermen work out of Dutch Harbor. They brave these harsh weather conditions while fishing for king crab.

Fishing Seasons

Alaska's main commercial fishery for Bristol Bay red king crab starts in mid-October and generally last for several days. Approximately 250 boats fish relentlessly until the annual catch quota is met. There are additional smaller red king crab fisheries in Norton Sound and Southeast Alaska.

Availability

When king crab is caught it is cooked and blast frozen to capture its quality. This commercial level of processing allows king crab to be kept frozen for long periods of time, up to a year or more. Frozen crab is glazed with an outer shell of frozen water to protect it from the elements. Because of the large size of this fishery, Bristol Bay red king crab is available all year round. A small portion of the annual catch is delivered to live tanks for fresh markets.
