A quick reminder that if you want your Open points tracked in the CEC registry to register with the CEC today. The CEC has received over 100 registrations in the Open division so far, but we know there are many more who have competed at sanctioned competitions this year through the Tour De Bloc who have not yet registered. It is not too late as there are many Open Local competitions left. You are encouraged to visit the CEC website (www.competitionclimbingcanada.com) for Open membership and registration information. It is a very easy and quick “on line” registration process and best of all for this year there is no charge. The CEC will then track your
points and you can see how you do compared to other climbers in other parts of Canada. The CEC uses these points to select the National Bouldering Team which will represent Canada at Internationally sanctioned competitions. Again you are encouraged to visit our website to find out more about joining the CEC and how you can qualify for the National Bouldering Team.

Anderl Heckmair, 98, died in hospital in Berlin.

Heckmair was one of the strongest rock climbers in Munich in the 1930s, with numerous first ascents in the Eastern Alps. Although he later distanced himself from the Nazi regime, the Eiger climb, which he made with Ludwig Vorg, Hans Kasparek and Heinrich Harrer, was extensively exploited by nazi propaganda.updated

Climb Alberta
In 1980, Climbers from across the province celebrated Alberta’s 75th birthday by participating in the climbing of 75 mountains in the Rockies. In 2005, Alberta has her Centennial birthday with even bigger celebration events planned.
The Alberta Centennial Mountain Expedition is organizing the climbing of 100 peaks from Waterton to Jasper. The chosen peaks represent mountains that are well-known to Albertans. Most are reasonable day trips that are easily accessible from major highways, and range in difficulty from scrambles to alpine climbs. The expedition invites individual and group participants to join in this ambitious project.
The full list of mountains is available at climbalberta.com Groups may chose to climb one mountain or many over the course of the year. The expedition team will try to accommodate every volunteer group in choosing climbs that are requested and suitable for each group while working towards the goal of accomplishing 100 summits.
To participate, visit the website www.climbalberta.com and follow the instructions found in the ‘volunteer’ section. This project is purely voluntary. Individual and group participants are expected to use the same prudence that they would on any mountaineering outing.
The organizers plan to use the climbalberta.com website extensively to report on the progress of the project. Each group will be asked to carry a digital camera and publish a short photo diary of their outing to the site along with personal stories. At the conclusion of the project there will be a celebration event where all are welcome in viewing a slide show of the climbers’ images along with personal stories and experiences. The proceeds of the Social will be donated toward the maintenance of the Alpine Club’s huts.
At this time, there is no registration fee as the organizers hope to secure more corporate/governmental sponsorship to cover all costs.
The Alberta Centennial Mountain Expedition is also currently trying to educate schoolchildren about the Rocky Mountains. With the support of Alberta Learning, new social studies resources are being created about the Rocky Mountain’s geography, geology, human history, and importance to the
world. Learning units are being created to target grade 4 curriculum, and will be available through a national online educational project. This learning initiative has been fortunate to partner with content providers, such as Parks Canada, who have provided images, written, and video material to be accessed by schoolchildren across Canada. The goal is to encourage and enable schoolchildren to learn about the mountains, their history and howthey came to shape the lives of Albertans.
The project is being organized out of Canmore, and anyone interested in volunteering to help the Expedition or has a specific request can email: info@climbalberta.com.
