Looks good Tim, always like the reports. Sometimes you elude to Bay fishing. Would it be to specific to mention which Bay? Just a thought, not looking for a secret spot or anything. Lost 3 out of the 6 teasers I bought so I will have to put in another order soon.

Kurt H

Kurt,

The bay I have eluded to in recent messages is the Raritan Bay. It's no secret, it has been loaded with bass and bunker for the past 4 weeks...possibly longer! Sorry to hear about the loss of your teasers, I got plenty left for you! ::))

Hi Tim,

More articles! I'm ready for fishing with Tim 102 right now.

How to fish a jetty. Which lures to use and where to place them. Also a little bit on how to tune eel squids.

Thanks a bunch for the web site and your help.

Tim,

I'm a friend of Geoff & Rich. Geoff told me to look up your site. Business forced me to move to the DC area three years ago. Before that I lived in Aberdeen Twp and spent a lot of time fishing from Sandy Hook down to Island Beach (my parents had a house at Normandy Beach until Dad retired in the early 70's). I'm going to live out my fishing fantasies through your site until I get back home.

Enjoy!

I have but one question.... Is that a little Charlie digging a nest on the pages that are under construction??? I like the site. Reports are helpful, and the photo pages are cool except for my "Peanut Head", and the teasers are a cut above any others I have used. How about an article about LARGE...How to target them, when, type of tackle needed etc. Keep up the good work Tim.

Danny O'Connor

No Dan, that's not a little Charlie digging a nest! There's too many fish around for Charlie to be digging a nest just yet! It's the tough times, when there's a lot of leg work between fish that Charlie can be found late at night in one of his sand nest...for those that don't know this phenomenon, when Charlie's board and I'm still optimistic, he will hollow out a place on the beach and crash...often falling asleep...Dan is familiar with this phenomenon!

Tim, Good luck with the site. I'm a novice to stripers but I"ve been trying. Missed one at the Jersey Shore,oh about 1/2 mi south of you this morning. You could see em they were thick, chasing peanuts, wouldnt bite. What should I have used ? Hank S.

Hank, it's very hard to say, with as much bait around as there is, the bass have been varying from reckless to ignoring all lures...sometimes people have said they've had to resort to live bunker, but I wouldn't go that far unless the fish that were ignoring my offers were LARGE...then I might stick a nut on there! If the bass were chasing the nuts and it wasn't just nuts gallivanting around, you may have tried a small Smilin' Bill jig, a Mega-bite lure, or a teaser rigged above a jig. A jig is super effective in those conditions as it will sink below the mass of bait or reach beyond it, in both cases, it looks like a separated bait and is often well received!

Hello Tim,

I've enjoyed your posts on the SFHP and look forward to being a regular visitor to your site. I consider myself primarily a freshwater fisherman but have recently been infected by the surf bug (which leads to "surfrat" wannabe). Once bitten, you acquire a serious and potentially life changing affliction that interrupts every aspect of daily life (i.e., work, family time, home repairs) with delusions of chasing monster stripers through the surf. Another symptom of this chronic illness is that you spend far too much time at your work computer reading about the great fishslayers of NJ and NY. However, I feel it is better to have fished vicariously than not to have fished at all.

One technical question: How do you rig a teaser with either a plug or bucktail setup? I assume the teaser is tied 2-3' above the plug, therefore appearing as if plug is chasing teaser. For plug or popper casting, I've been using 20 lb. Fireline tied to a barrel swivel with a 3-4' 40 lb. Ande leader. Plug is tied directly to leader. Your suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks, Mark

Thanks for the encouragement, it's a lot to keep up with! Welcome to the club, most of us have the "bug", and it's awesome! As for the teaser rigs, it appears that the way I do it is strangely in the minority. I'll post an article on my basic teaser/plug rigs. A couple things first off would be to keep the teaser a minimum of 36" above the plug, more if you can cast it...and I don't use mono as heavy or thick as 40# Ande in the surf, it's largely unnecessary, try either 25# fluorocarbon or 30# mono...they are both less visible and will get eaten more often! Good luck, check the link for my teaser/plug rig.

Hi Tim,

Just finished reading your report dated 11/7/99. Nice job. You've posted many well thought out and reports/editorials in the past, but for some reason, this one seemed like and extraordinarily good read! Just something about the way you worded it that kept me reading up to the end. Your parting comments about family values and a strong family unit are right on target! We should all be so blessed.

Keep up the good work.

Jim Kalemba

Thanks Jim, you're right, we should all be so blessed! I'm glad you enjoyed the page. Just to note, I did have it done as promised before 9am, and I uploaded it...only in my tired state, I forgot to save the changes...it was 10:30am before I realized that the page didn't change from the previous day...I was livid and it was quickly saved and uploaded. My apologies to anyone looking between 9-10:30am!

Tim,

Truly a great site! This site will undoubtly grow to epic proportions. You have good following which certainly will grow to a LARGE audience. I think the layout is well done and it looks great using Microsoft Internet Explorer on a 17" NEC MultiSynch XV monitor. Everyone here in the office loves the pictures. (Yes..there are a few fellow sports fans up here in Morristown.)

You've done a fine job, are an extremely talented fisherman and great writer. It is an honor to have fished with you and to continue to do so. Soon we will be happening on another adventure, one that everyone will be able to see in the future also. I look forward to working with you on that. This page is permanently bookmarked at work and at home.

Thanks for being an informative, generous host and for pushing me over the hardcore edge. Be good, stay well and best of luck.

--Geoff

Ah, Geoff, a.k.a., Laurel of the fabled Team Laurel and Hardy, thank you kind sir for the most generous compliments. It's been my pleasure to "enlighten" you two fine gentlemen...send my apologies to your wife for sending you over that "hardcore" edge! ::))

Tim, its difficult making a selection with the contents listed up top, the first day, I noticed they were on the side of the page, but then switched. Good luck, talk to you soon. P.S. maybe its just my server, or is that the way you designed the page ?

The contents frame should continue to appear on the left, I never moved it to the top. Try resizing the windows by holding your mouse button down while on the edge of the window and dragging. Also, if you "refresh" the window, it may right things.

J. Powers - Cape Cod , Mass 11/10/99.

Tim, I love your site. Good stuff. Makes me wish I lived in NJ this time of year. I'm sure that as time goes by your site will be THE premier place to visit. I've had no problems with the script or pictures on the site. I think all who've been introduced to you on other boards know with certainty that you da man. I'll be checking in daily.

Jay, kind sir, it was a pleasure to make your acquaintance this fall, and a pleasure to fish your home waters, the Ditch...I am in love with that place, it haunts my fishing hours and will continue to do so all the fishing days of my life! I'll see ya up there in the spring, I'll be the guy out there catching fish on jigs all night long while the guys tell me that they only eat herring during the herring run...I'll be easy to find, look for the very tired guy still wearing his neck light even though the sun has caught me still fishing after a long night....

Tim, nice site! Although I have not personally met you face to face, your posts on the other site are always great, especially your ditch reports a month or so back. Photos are on their way shortly via email, and I will provide captions. All the fish in the photos I'm sending were caught in Old Saybrook, either standing on "Ryan's Rock" or out in my boat throwing eels as close to the rock as possible. I believe you've heard the story of Ryan's Rock.

The big'un are down your way now. Go get them!

Thanks!

Gary, thank you, I have the pictures and story and will be working on your page. I have likewise enjoyed your posts on the WMI board. Thanks for the encouraging thoughts.

Tim,

I've been meaning to write and sign in with my kudos. Real nice site. I am looking forward to the board.

I really like the style boards where the hottest topics stay to the top. There is another fishing site besides SS.com that uses that format and its board is very active. Don't know what your possibilities are.

Thanks for posting the pic of IRI. It lets others into "my world". It's not a very big piece of territory but as you can see, it's easy to spend my time there. Both physically an in my daydreams. I sit at this terminal and my mind often goes to it's east end. I have a pic of a typical "nice" Indian River fish on the way. A thousand pardons for the ugly mug hooked to it.

My best, Hugh aka Plug

Hugh, thank you for the picture, it has really got me thinking about that trip in December that you promised Charlie and I...I am really looking forward to it! It's nice to share not only a love of fish, but a love of God with someone I've never me, and you certainly don't need to apologize for the ugly mug...I have some good photo editing programs! ::))

Tim, this site is already on my short list of "must visit daily sites" Keep up the good work. The site looks great on my 17" Mitsubishi monitor set at 800x600 Netscape 4.61. I would really like to see your thoughts on fishing Inlets; Lures to use, where to concentrate during which flow, etc. I'm waiting to order some jigs and eel squids as I tie my own teasers. Would also like to see Megabites and other hard to find Tim favorites. Thanks, KenK

Ken, excellent idea on the article for fishing inlets! As many know, inlets are the joining of ocean and bays or rivers, no finer spot to hunt stripers! I'll work on it as I finish the article on teasers and knots and such. Thanks.

Hey Tim,

You're off to a good start here! Quick question about the flies...how is the action different between the saddle hackle flies and the regular deceivers? Thanks again!

JasonC

Jason, the different in action is really a difference in reaction...when a fly with hackles is stripped or retrieved, the hackles will wiggle seductively, while a fly with hackles will wiggle somewhat but with the addition of pulsing as the water moving over the fly will compress the bucktail to the rear, then it will kinda spring back out as the fly/water movement stops. Both are very attractive to the bass!

Keeps lookin' better and better. The fly pages are great and I'll just have to order some for teasers. There's a few of those I'd bite on myself! Wasn't there a Jigs-Dressed section in the contents, originally? Did you cancel that thought or did I just hallucinate the whole thing at the end of a long day. Wouldn't be the first time.

Best regards,

Bill Klein

Bill, no, you aren't crazy, I've opted to move all the jigs under one page, but as of yet, the pages are still in their birthing stages...I am putting every effort into getting all the pictures, sizes, and prices together to put up ASAP. When it's done, all the jigs will be under the same contents selection, Jigs.

Tim,

I've been checking out the progress of your site regularly, lookin good! Its been cool to actually put faces to some of the names on the WMI board. I'll be sending you some pics of this past season as soon as I get back to Maine for a little R'nR.

Also, I'm thinking about doing something about my Fishing obsession this winter that is more productive than day dreaming all the time. I'm thinking about tying some teasers and bucktails. What are the bare essential? Could you recommend any books on the subject.

Keep up the good work man, I'm looking forward to the fully operational version!

Regards,

Andy Gray

Andy, the bare essentials would be a vice, good scissors, bucktails in all the colors you want, and thread. Add to that crystal flash, peacock herl, glue, prism eyes, epoxy and a drying wheel for the "advanced" versions! I don't know about a book for tying teasers, a very basic how-to fly tying book should show you the steps, but a name escapes me...check out Amazon and search for Fly Tying and pick out the most basic book for the beginning steps...you'll learn to improvise in short order...

Tim, you know what I think, its a great page and a great idea.....do me one favor (like I gotta ask) stay true to what you goal is. We watched another fine looking site go down and we learned a lesson.......again great site, maybe this will help me catch more bass that you just once when we are out.......

John Musial

John, I don't think I'm the same kind of person that happened to, nor are my intents or goals with this site motivated in the same manner as his ended up being...at least a valuable lesson, as you noted, was learned from it all. As for the catching of the elusive striped bass...that's wholly up to them....they tell me you gotta lose those stinky cigars or stop breathing on them when you are releasing them...then they'll cooperate better! ::))

Tim, in the year or so that I have been reading your writing on the board I have really come to appreciate your style. But here you seem to have broken out of some invisible barrier and you have had room to expand your writing. There are two elements needed here: first you have to have some knowledge and some experience, second, you have to be able to put it in words. You have all that covered and then some. You have a way of putting the reader right on the scene and I enjoy it immensely. And, of course, I LOVE to see the pics! Keep it comin'! Jack (Walkin' Jack) Moncrief

WJ, as always, I thank you. Other than living thousands of miles apart, you and I share much in common, I always love to read your words as well. Thanks again my friend.

Great site Tim, the best thing is the exposure to different techniques. You know, you cruise along doing your own thing with some success and you become too content with it. You've got some good stuff here that I gotta try out. Never tried riggin an eel, never used teasers on my plugs. This is a good resource here-keep it up. Oh yeah, love the pics-I'll send some. Tim, as in every one of your endeavors this site is top notch and I'm sure it will only get better. It is a pleasure to meet a guy with the same passion and drive that I posses with a great knack for expressing it in print. We don't always agree, but that's what fishing is all about, isn't it? All the different choices that we're presented with help to mold us into a better surfcaster and a good fisherman as a whole. You are certainly one who is well on the way to mastering his trade in this great sport and for this reason I think your site will do well. You "tell it like it is" and that's why I like you because as you and all the rest of the guys know- I sure don't pull any punches either. I look forward to fishing with you again soon and I'm going crazy trying to decide which pictures to send you and which to leave out!!! How many will you take?! :) Dave Christinzio

Dave, thanks for the extremely positive feedback, and not agreeing is what makes people think. Send as many pictures as you want, I'll put up some, and send them back to you. I really haven't decided on a number per person, just what I think makes a comfortable page of pictures. If there are some you really want to see, let me know, those will get priority treatment! I look forward to our next run in as well....

Hi Tim, My name is Jon and I like the site. I'm looking forward to ordering some jigs from you once all the info's up. The jigs available in stores aren't built properly and its obviously why you started making your own. I'm fairly new to surf fishing but I've been fishing most my life and I've always caught fish and continue to. Fishing is fishing - you just need to adapt to the conditions and situation. I've been learning alot and doing fairly well. I've learned a great deal via the internet and I've enjoyed and learned from your posts. My days off are W-F and my buddy Chris and I usually get in 2 days each week. What I'd like to see more of but it probably won't is spots to fish. I understand people not wishing to divulge them. That bar inside the bay sounds intriging. I've had some good success inside. That's about it. I look forward to the future evolution of the site. Jon

Tim, you sure did a nice job on your site. I knew you were ready for your own tackle shop! Tim on your daily story in the "What?" section, is it possible to use a font that is not bold? It seems that it easier on the eyes when the type is not bold, just a suggestion. Not to sound like a broken record, very nice site.

JohnS, I changed the font, I thought the bold would be easier to read, but then I only read it as I am typing, hope it's better the way it is now! Thanks for the encouragement!

Tim Just stumbled in search for a lure Al Ristori mentioned in todays article, but can't seem to figure out the manufacturer. Megabyte Pencil Popper" was the name he used. Anyway your report was great. Even though I am a boat fisherman I got the urge to fish the surf. The boat was taken out of the water two weeks early. It was my fault, there was a misunderstanding between the marina people and myself. Anyway I am eating my heart out reading about the great striper fishing. You mentioned the B & N report. Does that mean the Betty & Nicks report. Thanks for brightening my day Dave Keery Easy Go davek@worldwideapparel.com

Dave, you are correct on the report. As for the Megabites, I only know of one place that carries the model I like, the one with two trebles, not three. It's the Sportsman Center in Bordentown, NJ. Sorry to hear you are without your boat as the season heats up! :(

I was out today from Mantoloking all the way up north to Union Beach, NOTHING, South wind just killed it for now.... A far as your reports go, I think your running into a problem, at least in my eyes. Take it from the users perspective, why read it? I don't want anyone to give me exact spots, actually I'm dead against that. But your reports are basically your Diary, which is fine, but not very informative. I mean you could be fishing anywhere from Sandy Hook to Cape May. I think you could be a little more open with what County you were in:) I don't know maybe I'm just rambling because the fishing was terrible today, but if your gonna have a "fishing report" then do so, if not, then don't. Just my opinion.... Good luck and all the best with the site, it's lookin pretty good...

Todd

Todd, you are certainly correct, this ponderance has caused me great concern as of late, I would like to tell everyone all the details of each trip, right down to which rock to stand on, but I'm sure you understand why that would certainly be counter productive. Suffice it to say that I will add more detail to my reports. I will have the real "Reports" section functional soon, then everyone can put up reports. One note to add, I've been fishing further south than ever before, down on LBI. That said, I'd like to also bring up the fact that where I am fishing it is not easy, I have been there now 8 times, only twice taken less than 10 fish, and not seen one other person besides Charlie or I hook so much as one striper, not even a small one, yet there is no lack of people fishing right besides us. To me, a person fishing and catching fish is great thing, even if they are doing so where I would like to be, but a group of people with lines in the water without so much as a prayer to land even a small bass but making it impossible for me to fish there and catch fish is a sad thing. To tell others of such a place where the fish are but are very difficult to catch would just mean more people fishing wrong in the right spot. I had a guy last night sum it up for me. Charlie and I were catching bass up to 32" on almost every cast...they were not only a long cast off but you had to work the current just right with just the right weight jig. There was a very nice guy who stopped just above us and was fishing as well, he saw us catching fish and was sort of cheering us on. Each person that walked by him asked him if he had caught anything. He replied no, but those two guys are killing them! After the third time, I asked him to please not point anymore people into our small area or it would become too crowded for him and us. He laughed and said, "It's all luck, and tonight you guys got the luck!" It's that kind of mentality, a nice guy, not a hint of how to catch a bass, that crowds these small places. I laughed. He then asked if we had caught any in other places last night. I said "Yes, we seem to get lucky in most places." I thought that would sum up my feelings to him on luck. While luck is involved for the guy who saunters up to the surf and plucks a 25 pound fish out with his first cast, luck has little to do with consistently catching fish while others come up dry. I will be more specific, but that page really is just a diary which this time of year consists of mainly what fishing I am doing, but your point is understood. Thanks for the input!

Since you replied.....it depends on where you would like to be...right now you are in 6 because of you site being informative and the like. So if you want to be annoying, give people misinformation, lie to them, and curse them out!!

Nag-A-Rific

Nag, all good points, between you and me, everything on here is made up, it's all misinformation, lies! I really don't go fishing, I make all this stuff up as I see fit...it's quite a conspiracy, I have possibly 100 people who would swear they've fished with me, but they are all just part of the conspiracy...it's diabolical I tell you! :)

Tim, I was reading your report from 11/23 and I agree! To add to your report of seeing these nets right off of the beach, I have seen the results of the nets first hand. I was fishing with a friend off of Ocean City, NJ two weekends ago and we saw a netter who had just pulled in his catch, or should I say by-catch. Behind his boat was a line of belly up bass. We saw only 5-6 fish, but who knows how many others were out of sight. I thought you might be interested in this story

Sincerely, Jeff Melrose Alexandria, VA

Jeff, it's sad that there are many thousands of guys fishing hard for a few fish per trip and a few selfish guys killing thousands of bass each day...it doesn't seem fair but until we do something about it, it will just continue to get worse. Many millions of pounds of bass head south each year to die for the sake of but a few people. Many more millions of pounds die as by-catch and are neither reported or removed from the commercial quota, it's just as if it never happened. It's so sad...

Tim, I'm glad that you didn't take my first inquiry about the "reports" the wrong way. In fact when I told you a certain spot that I was killing the bass at I told you to "keep your mouth shut!" :) I don't want you or anyone else to get the idea that I wanted you to give up certain spots, because I sure as hell won't. I think your mentioning of the County you were in is more than enough, Monmouth, Ocean, you get the point. Too many hours go in to finding a place that you feel comfortable with to blabber it out to everyone in cyberspace. I also thought it was quite hysterical that through all the fish that you have caught that I saw your name in the Asbury Park Press for a 14 pound bass, lol. Continued luck with the site....

Todd

Todd, you know me better than that, I am serious about people's input, I want this site to be what you guys want it to be. I thank you for your input and welcome more! It is odd that a 14 pound bass would be the biggest in the whole tournament, but you take what you can when times are tough!

Donald W Andrews Great WEB site, I agree those netters should be enforced better, but the problem is there are probably not enough enforcement officers for the huge amount of area they need to cover. Lawmakers should put additional money towards hiring more enforcement officers. Good luck this weekend in your tourney, I am fishing very early on Thanksgiving morning, so lets hope we both get a chance at the BIG one, again great WEB site and have a GREAT thanksgiving. Don_W_Andrews@email.mobil.com

Thanks Don, I'm trying! You're right, we need more enforcement and stiffer fines and better observations of what gets thrown back dead with each net being set. I hope you're doing better with the fish this weekend than I am...I'm having a tough time, in my two trips out, I'm up to a total of 1 short, Charlie's got 2 shorts...not real promising so far!

Tim,

Great site! Years ago I fished nothing but bucktails in the Hudson River for bass and did well. Your jigs look great (I'm putting in a order) although now I strictly fish (plugging) from the surf. Are these jigs best for inlets with strong currents - does it matter?

Jim

Jim, bucktails still work! I use them a lot in the surf, especially during the day or in any rough water. The heavier ones are best in either really rough water or strong current. The smaller ones will work in current but they don't need current to be effective. Inlets happen to be an ideal spot for jigs!

Very nice site Tim. It gives others a chance to see their friends and spreads useful information. Good job keep it up!!

Thanks Bill, it's good to see you on-line again, things were getting a little dreary in your absence! (Note to others: Check out Bill's Photos somebody got a fifty last fall!)

Tim, thanks again for the E-mail on bondo molds and thanks for referring me to your website. Your jigs look great!! and I can/t wait to get to some of the articles. I read "Ryan's Rock" in the New England Fisherman and being both a pediatrician and a fisherman, I remember that story really touching my heart! Thanks for everything and Merry Christmas!!

Paul, thanks for the positive comments, I put a lot of effort into this site and the jigs! Yes, Gary touched a lot of people by sharing his story with us, our prayers still go out to Gary and his family as they heal from this tragedy.

Tim, The site is looking great. Thanks for the tidal info. I tried waiding way out there at low tide just after sundown. It was pretty cool having bass on surface between me and the shore in 2 1/2 feet of water.

Kurt H

Kurt, there's nothing like standing thigh deep in the water, bass and peanuts all around you...it's one of the things I love about this time of year...I'm glad you got to see it!

nice site you have here. was wondering if you got my email yesterday about placing a order from you. can't wait for that article about fishing inlets. chris s

Chris, thanks, and yes I did, thanks again! I am working on the article now for fishing inlets, it's hard to decide how in depth to go, to deep and you'll lose some people.
