Welcome to KDE on FreeBSD

KDE is a powerful Open Source graphical desktop environment for Unix and Unix-like workstations. It combines ease of use, contemporary functionality and outstanding graphical design with the technological superiority of the Unix operating system.

FreeBSD is an advanced operating system for x86 compatible (including Pentium and Athlon), amd64 compatible (including Opteron, Athlon 64, and EM64T), Alpha/AXP, IA-64, PC-98 and UltraSPARC® architectures. It is derived from BSD, the version of UNIX® developed at the University of California, Berkeley.

The KDE on FreeBSD team hopes this site will be a valuable resource for all who are interested in maintaining the high level of compatibility between FreeBSD and KDE that has been seen to date. The goal is to facilitate the discussion of patches, finding bugs, suggesting features and hopefully becoming a valuable member of both the KDE and FreeBSD communities.

[2004-12-16] KDE 3.3.2 i18n ports fixed

All i18n ports have been fixed. Enjoy your i18nized KDE!

[2004-12-15] KDE 3.3.2 i18n ports broken

For those of you having difficulties with the KDE 3.3.2 i18n ports, it turns out that KDE supplied the KDE on FreeBSD team with different distfiles than the ones that were uploaded to the distribution servers. That means all the kde-i18n ports are currently broken (wrong checksum and wrong plist). We'll need a little while to fix them all.

Unfortunately, this also means that the KDE 3.3.2 packages will also be delayed even longer. Please be patient.

[2004-12-13] Multiple KDE Security Advisories

KDE has released multiple security advisories for KDE 3.3.2 and earlier:

The FreeBSD ports of KDE 3.3.2 contain the necessary patches, but all versions prior to 3.3.2 are affected (i.e., 3.3.1 = bad, 3.3.2 = good). We recommend updating to KDE 3.3.2 immediately.

[2004-12-13] KDE 3.3.2 in Ports

There is one issue that might affect KMail/Kontact users who have the security/cryptplug port installed. From UPDATING:

The security/cryptplug port is not compatible with recent versions of gpgme and has been changed to depend on gpgme03 (the last version of gpgme compatible with cryptplug).

Users who have been using cryptplug in order to enable PGP/MIME support in KMail should DEINSTALL BOTH security/cryptplug and security/gpgme03 before updating KDE to version 3.3.2. Cryptplug is NOT necessary anymore to enable PGP/MIME support in KMail and will cause the kdepim3 build to fail due to conflicting dependencies.

To find out more about configuring PGP/MIME support in KMail/Kontact, see the HowTo.

Binary packages are now available from the FruitSalad Project for i386 machines. To find out which ones are suitable for your system, check the output of sysctl kern.osreldate.

[2004-12-08] KDE 3.3.2 Released
