The National Marine Manufacturers Association,
along with the Personal Watercraft Industry Association, has developed a
certification program to help the personal watercraft (PWC) manufacturers
comply with established international standards and safety regulations,
and to help to inform the public of such compliance when purchasing equipment.
The NMMA program certifies that the design meets the standards of ISO 13590,
Small craft - Personal watercraft - Construction and system installation
requirements.
This ISO standard applies to the construction and installation of permanently
installed petrol fuel systems, electrical systems, ventilation, and flotation.
The manufacturer has the responsibility of assuring that their production
units are manufactured in compliance with the certified design.
A manufacturer participating in this program must certify all models
as fitted with all factory supplied equipment on a model year basis.
Inspectors from nationally recognized independent inspection agencies
or NMMA staff visit the manufacturer and physically inspect each model
for compliance to all certification standards. All certified personal
watercraft display a label verifying compliance to ISO 13590.
