Parents should protect their children's personal information. Here's what you can do as a parent to protect your child's privacy.
Teach kids to be careful about disclosing personal information about themselves online, especially in chat rooms and on bulletin boards. The rules of the road are different for PRETEENS (under age 13) than they are for TEENS.
Preteens
Children under 13 should never give out their personal information online without a parent's permission. Often, kids will give Web sites their name, address, and email in order to participate in a chat or to enter a contest.
A U.S. law, the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act, requires commercial Web sites directed at kids to respect the privacy of children under 13. Here are more resources for parents on how to protect your child's privacy.
