ICRC operations in Eastern Europe and Central Asia
Activities throughout the world: a country-by-country round-up of the ICRC’s work in Eastern Europe and Central Asia
Fighting the tuberculosis outbreak among detainees in the Caucasus ©ICRC/ref. az-e-00045h

Despite considerable challenges, the ICRC's operations in the northern Caucasus assist nearly 140,000 people a month and include support for hospitals, water-supply networks and sewage systems in Chechnya, Ingushetia and Daghestan. In the southern Caucasus, the organization enjoys a high degree of acceptance and is involved in a range of development and health-related programmes. In Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia it is helping the authorities to bring the epidemic of tuberculosis among the prison population under control, while in western Georgia and Abkhazia it is launching income-generating projects to restore a degree of economic self-sufficiency. The ICRC's regional delegation in Moscow covers the Russian Federation and provides specialized support for some neighbouring countries.

The country and region names used herein are intended to facilitate reference and have no political significance.

Russian Federation: ICRC operations in the northern Caucasus
As armed confrontations and attacks continue in Chechnya, a great number of people remain extremely vulnerable both in Chechnya and the northern Caucasus. The security situation remains a major problem for the local population and hampers humanitarian action.
