Packing a punch
Eastwood delivers a knockout

Million Dollar Baby--USA, 2004. Clint Eastwood, director. Clint Eastwood, Hilary Swank, Morgan Freeman, Jay Baruchel, Mike Colter star. An old boxing trainer reluctantly undertakes training a talented female boxer. The film works more for its quiet moments than for its dialogue, and is easily one of the best of the boxing genre. Nominated for seven Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director.

Life Is a Miracle (Zivot je zazrak)--Serbia and Montenegro, France, 2004. Emir Kusturica, director. Slavko Stimac, Natasa Solak, Vesna Trivalic, Vuk Kostic star. In Serbo-Croatian, German and Hungarian with Czech subtitles. The director of Underground looks at Bosnia in 1992 when war broke out. Residents of a town want to build a railroad to increase tourism. Meanwhile a married Christian man falls in love with a Muslim nurse in a sometimes-serious, sometimes-comic drama.

Meet the Fockers (Jeho fotr, to je lotr)--USA, 2005. Jay Roach, director. Robert De Niro, Ben Stiller, Dustin Hoffman, Barbra Streisand, Blythe Danner star. The young woman's family from Meet the Parents goes to Florida to spend some time with the future in-laws. They couldn't be more different. The comedy builds fairly slowly. The teaming of Robert De Niro and Dustin Hoffman eventually does produce a few laughs.
