Islamic Art
Islamic Art, through its brilliant use of color, form and design, is perhaps the most accessible way to understand a complex civilization that some might see. The term 'Islamic Art' refers to the sum of artistic manifestations created by both Muslim and non-Muslim artists under Islamic rule or influence of Islam.
As a religious art, the major characteristic of Islamic art is transcending distances in time and space through a unity of aesthetic style and purpose, spiritually expressing the Oneness nature of God among different cultures and wide geographical boundaries.
Islamic art extended from Spain, Portugal and north Africa to central Asia, from 7th through 19th century. The first and most important form in Islamic art is calligraphy, because of its association with the Qur'an, the Muslim holy book, which is written in Arabic. Arabic calligraphy was the vehicle that spread the message of Islam and thus became the most venerated art form even for non-Arabic-speaking cultures.
Although the Qur'an prohibits the worship of idols, it does not forbid figuration, figural imagery is an important aspect of Islamic art. Such images occur primarily in secular and especially courtly arts and appear in a wide variety of media and in most periods and places in which Islam flourished. Islamic art also presented in more developed art forms like manuscripts, textiles and rugs, metalwork, ceramics and glass.
