It can be tempting to do without any insurance at all . . . I mean, what can go wrong lying around a pool on Malta for 14 days, right? So go ask the fellah in the bad suit with the sweaty forehead and the handful of papers, who's trying to tell you the hotel accommodation you'd paid for has burnt down. Or try insisting on NHS rights while your wife is deep into appendicitis, and the very sympathetic doctor just keeps pushing a claim form at you.
Long story short, don't be tempted to go without. Good cheap insurance for a single journey for two people costs only a small premium for a fortnight in Europe, or the med. And that's real cover, hospitals, medivac, operations, whatever. If you want to add on a few bits and pieces, like cancellations, baggage, and sports gear, it's not that much more. Going without can really wreck your annual holiday.
So here are the angles. Plan your insurance as carefully as you plan your holiday, by working it out to the day, you can cut significant amounts off the premium. Further, work out exactly what cover you need and discard any extras. Use the booking button at the top right of this page as a comparison engine, and run a number of insurance mixes through it before you settle on a premium.
Absolutely. The reason is that insurance companies have recovery and assistance agents on the ground in all countries to deal with very ill, very injured or very set upon policy holders. The quality of these arrangements is vital to you, when you need help. Good re-insurance companies (and we keep our arrangements with the best) insist that their retailers have spot on recovery arrangements. For the most part our policies gain access to the two biggest names in international assistance, and wherever they are not represented, the insurers are continually checking the on the ground assistance processes.
So the rules are, pare your premium needs to the bone, than carefully, carefully, read the rules of cover. Clearly, when insurers cut the premium level to the roots, they leave little room for generous claims settlements. You need to know exactly how our policy works, and so, if you need to make a claim, you will know your rights and obligations in making it.
And don't forget, if its too cheap, and you need to claim, you may end up wondering what you got for your money.
