| Three times the fun!
Eddie’s hosting the Logies again this year, but this time Rove and Andrew will be by his side
When the Nine Network’s Eddie McGuire, Network Ten’s Rove McManus and the Seven Network’s Andrew O’Keefe got together earlier this year to host the tsunami appeal, Australia Unites, the three got on so well that they were all keen to do it again.
And so they will – at this year’s TV WEEK Logie Awards.
“It was such an unprecedented event, for all the networks and their talent to work together. Even at the time, we were all saying it would be nice to be able to do it again down the track, under circumstances that weren’t so upsetting for so many people, “ says Rove.
Deal Or No Deal host Andrew, who met Eddie and Rove for the first time that night, was surprised to discover how easygoing they both were – especially
as Andrew had become famous by doing impersonations of Eddie on Big Bite.
“Eddie was great with the icebreaking,” he remembers. “He just came right out and said, ‘I loved your work on the sketch show.’ He has a great way of putting people at ease.”
The success of Australia Unites meant Eddie got the go-ahead for his idea of having multiple hosts for this year’s Logies, at Melbourne’s Crown Casino on May 1.
“It’s not just about one person hosting the show, it’s about the industry. I think having the three hosts this year will really give it that feel.”
Andrew believes the three of them will work together even better at the Logies than they did during the tsunami appeal, where they were all restrained by the soberness of the event. “It was a first and it was a serious matter, so we probably couldn’t be our natural selves to a great degree,” he says. “This time, I imagine, the shackles are off. I’m not suggesting you’ll see jelly wrestling or anything, but it should be a visual feast – or an aural one, anyway.”
Last year Rove won Logies for Most Popular TV Presenter and Most Popular Light Entertainment/Comedy Program for Rove Live, as well as the coveted Gold Logie. So how will he feel this year if he’s up and down all night, both hosting and accepting awards?
“It’ll certainly be fine if anyone wants to give me enough votes for me to pick up any awards this year,” he laughs. “It might well be, if not for the hosting, I’ll have
no other reason to be up on stage!”
Andrew is far less modest about his chance of taking out the award for Most Popular TV Presenter. “It’ll be awfully embarrassing when Eddie clobbers me over the head with the Logie I’ve just won,” he predicts, “but I’m sure we’ll live!”
Rove insists the three hosts won’t be fighting for the microphone on the night.
“I think the three of us will just be enjoying each other’s company and working with each other so much that there’s no point counting who has the most minutes on air… although hopefully it will be me!” he laughs.
Andrew has other ideas. “I think we’re going to have to have some serious pre-production meetings to ensure that we all have a microphone… and that mine’s the only one with batteries in it!”
