Child Cancer Research
The POGO Research Unit (PRU) was initiated in 1998 with a mandate to focus on research that contributes to a better understanding of childhood cancer and improved outcomes for a child with cancer and their families.
PRU research activity will:
- Enhance our understanding of the causes of childhood cancer
- Inform policy development
- Align resources with needs
- Diminish the impact of childhood cancer on the children, families, and our society
For a 5 year period beginning in 1998, the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care (MOHLTC) provided funding to the PRU, allowing POGO to facilitate and sponsor important research within the spectrum of childhood cancer. With this support, much has been learned, but there is still a long way to go. To this end, POGO is committed to increasing its research capacity and is seeking funding support from the private sector and granting agencies, in addition to the ongoing support we receive from the MOHLTC.
This additional funding will enable POGO to make the critical research staffing investments required to execute the research and fulfill the PRU mandate. Expert staffing needs include senior scientists, junior investigators, epidemiologists, statisticians, health economists, and others. In an initial campaign POGO is seeking to raise $2.5 million from the private sector, representing 25% of the total PRU budget from 2004-2009. Beyond this period, POGO will continue to raise funds in support of PRU research.
