Mini guide to Austin
Austin has been called the “Live Music Capital of the World.” Its music, natural beauty, and museums make it the cultural center of Texas. Situated in the center of the city is the ornate Texas State Capital building. A tour can be taken of the impressive building, or one can wander down Congress Avenue and take in the rest of the capital of Texas. Austin boasts historic buildings, museums, and galleries. By Congress Avenue and the Texas State Capital building are the LBJ Library, the art deco Texas Memorial Museum of Natural and Social History, the Greek Revival style Governor’s Mansion, and the Archer M Huntington Gallery which features modern art. Many people are drawn to Austin’s lively nightlife and music on East 6th Street. Located here are the numerous bars with live bands that make Austin such a “hip town.” However, if you prefer something calmer, go to Zilker Park. The park is home to a botanical garden, hiking and biking trails, and a sculpture garden. It also contains the entrance to the Barton Springs natural swimming pool and the Zilker Nature Preserve. Near Austin and easily reachable by car is the National Wildflower Research Center, containing every type of wildflower in Texas. West of Austin is the stunning Texas hill country with its imposing rock formations and rugged natural beauty. The hill country also contains an authentic cowboy town, Fredericksburg, complete with a dude ranch and the Cowboy Artists of America Museum. Numerous daily flights are available between the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport and the airports in Houston and Dallas, from which there are direct flights to almost all major American cities and many cities around the world. Austin is also served by Amtrak rail, through which you can link to most of the nation.
