Valas off to Mittal Steel

Movers and Shakers

By Frantisek Bouc
Staff Writer, The Prague Post
March 2, 2005

Sokol
Truckmaker Scania boosted the top management in its Czech office by appointing Karol Sokol business director and Zdenek Petras head of the firm's servicing department.

Sokol moved to Scania Czech Republic from the company's Slovak office, where he worked as general manager. Under Sokol, Scania grew to take 23 percent of the market in Slovakia. Sokol, who holds a master's degree in corporate management from the University of Economics in Bratislava, also worked in the past as a sales manager for another Swedish truckmaker, Volvo.

Petras joined Scania from Denzel Praha, the official Czech dealer for Japanese carmaker Mitsubishi. Petras studied engineering at the Czech Technical University in Prague.

Rockstein
Leading alternative telecom operator Tele2 has brought in an expert from Germany to take over as manager for the company's Czech sales and marketing activities. Oliver Rockstein already has two years of experience for Tele2 working in Germany. In Prague his main task will be to repeat his accomplishments in Germany that led to massive growth in the number of Tele2 customers. Rockstein has worked in the telecommunications industry for five years. He holds a degree in business administration and economics from the University of Hanover in Germany.

Lastovka
IBM is another company that introduced a new marketing manager at the year's start. Vladimir Lastovka will now take that seat for the computer giant's Czech operations. Lastovka previously worked as a marketing director and head of external communications for the Czech office of British life insurer Aviva. Prior to that, Lastovka worked as a trade marketing manager with German batterymaker Varta. Lastovka studied international relations, economics and literature at Woodbrooke Quaker Study Centre in Birmingham, England.

Jirka
David Jirka was named chief vertical project manager for finance at software firm Cleverlance. Jirka's main responsibilities include leading the firm's project managers and managing IT projects involving key corporate clients. Jirka honed his IT skills during his studies at the IT Faculty of the University of Economics in Prague and later through his work at software firm Unicorn.

Meanwhile, Cleverlance's founder and general manager Jakub Dosoudil remains unaccounted for after spending his holidays in the region of Thailand struck by the devastating tsunamis in late December.

Valas
Radim Valas was appointed economic director for Mittal Steel Ostrava (previously known as Ispat Nova Hut). He replaces Vladimir Korfant. Before joining Mittal Steel, Valas worked as a CFO at another north Moravian steel company, Vitkovice Steel.
