Historically, Arkansas belongs to the American South. It sided with the Confederacy in the Civil War, and its capital, Little Rock, was a focal-point in the civil rights movement. This provides a fascinating backdrop for visitors.
Little Rock, the political, geographical, and financial centre of Arkansas is at the meeting point of its two major regions, the northwestern hills and the eastern Delta. The town today has a relaxed, open feel, a far cry from the dramatic events of the civil rights struggle.
Little Rock contains several cultural locations. Several noteworthy museums include: the Museum of Discovery, for children; the Arkansas Art Center, with work by local and well-known artists; and the Military Museum, which focuses on the Civil War. Former frontier towns like Fort Smith and Van Buren retain their Old West flavour.
The resort town of Hot Springs offers numerous opportunities for relaxing in natural hot springs, and both the Ouachita and Ozark Mountains offer hiking and climbing options. If you are looking for good places to stay, eat, or drink, your best bets are Little Rock and Hot Springs.
A tour of the Deltalands of the Mississippi River is a good excuse to hire a car. The varied topography of the Deltalands, at the mouth of the third largest river in the world, has many scenic views and a variety of plant and animal life for wildlife watchers.
Little Rock International Airport offers direct flights to many cities through out the United States.
