USC Upstate sweeps Lander in softball doubleheader
SPARTANBURG----Allie Cyrill scored on a fielding error in the bottom of the seventh in game one while Jessica Jolly pitched a complete-game shutout in game two to give the Spartans the doubleheader sweep over conference opponent Lander on Saturday afternoon at Cyrill Stadium. (Boxscores) USC Upstate won by scores of 3-2 and 8-0 and improved their overall record to 12-2 and a 4-2 mark in Peach Belt play. Lander fell to 16-12 and 1-6 in the league. In game one, the Spartans scored two runs in the second. Cyrill walked and Jenna Keith followed up with a walk of her own. Terra Goswick sacrificed both runners into scoring position with only one out. Ashleigh Beck drove in pinch-runner Erin Driggers with a sacrifice fly to put the Spartans on the board. Keith would score on a wild pitch to give the Spartans the 2-0 lead. Lander responded however, scoring a run in the third and one in the fifth. In the third, Heather Bishop singled and Kerri Davis walked. Amber Yarborough sacrificed the runners into scoring position on a bunt. Colleen Leggieri would then provide a sacrifice fly scoring Bishop to make the score 2-1. In the fifth, Leggieri (pictured) hit a solo homerun to right-center to tie the game at 2-2. In the seventh, Cyrill led off with a double and Keith was intentionally walked. Goswick would lay down a sacrifice bunt with one out and runners on second and third. Beck then hit a sharp groundball that shortstop Lindsey Sammons bobbled to score Cyrill and give the victory to the Spartans. Kasey Heron (3-0) picked up the win in relief for the Spartans. Austin Murray (4-4) took the loss for Lander. In game two, USC Upstate would score three in the first and three in the second to cruise to the 8-0 victory. Keith provided the big play of the game, delivering on a three-run homerun to right-center in the first. Keith was 1-for 2 for the game with three runs batted in. Tiffany Pitcher went a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate as well for the Spartans. Jolly (6-1) was magnificent on the mound, allowing just a single hit in five innings of work to receive the victory.
