Lilac Breasted Roller (in the rain!) Elephants, Kruger National Park President Paul Kruger signed a proclamation, on 26th March 1898, establishing a sanctuary for wildlife between the Sabie and Crocodile Rivers. Although not the first national park in the world, the Sabie Game Reserve - as it was then known - was the first large Wildlife reserve in Africa. The Park occupies 1 948 528 hectares of Mpumalanga formerly known as the Eastern Transvaal. Now the Park has increased in size considerably since the boundaries between Mozambique have been taken down and areas of this country are incorporated into the Park. Divided into five main botanical divisions the Park is home to nearly 150 different mammal species, 510 types of bird and impressive populations of reptiles, amphibians, fish (a surprising 49 species) and countless invertebrates. Accommodation, within the National Park itself, is in several camps which are mainly self-catering. Skukuza, the largest camp in the park, is also the administrative centre. Other camps include, Berg-en-dal - a fairly new camp in a picturesque montane setting approx 12 kilometres from the Malelane entrance gate; Olifants - a modern camp which lies on a cliff overlooking the Olifants River and Shingwedzi situated in a forest on the banks of the Shingwedzi River. There are also several Bush Camps such as Shimuwini, Bateleur, Sirheni and Jakkalsbessie. Along it's western boarders lies many of the Private Game Reserves - Singita, Ngala, Djuma, Londolozi, Manyeleti, Sabi Sand, Timbavati and Thornybush. Within these reserves are the Luxury Game Lodges such as Singita's Ebony Lodge, or Djuma's Vuyatela where all your needs are catered for. Early morning game drives in open vehicles take you deep into the Wild African Bush with hopeful sightings of Lion, Elephant, Buffalo, Cheetah and Wildebeast - The Big Five. Many of these reserves, who at one time had electric fences around their properties, have opened up their lands to allow the animals of the Kruger to roam freely. |
