Saltwater fishing is a way of life for many folks, it is much more than just fishing in saltwater :-) We can break it down into two primary groups of saltwater fishers - recreational fishermen and commercial fishermen. These are the two most general "user groups" as they are known.
Recreational anglers are folks that fish the saltwater primarily for pleasure and relaxation. Some will target species that they also enjoy eating, although keeping the saltwater fish that you catch is not a prerequisite - they'll serve us all better and further into the future if we learn to respect them and carefully release them. Eating them is fine, it's what they are there for, but wasteful practices like killing all the biggest fish for "fanny patting" photos at the dock should be something we all strive to eliminate. There are simply too many pressures already on our saltwater fishes, too many people utilizing them - the days of the bottomless ocean mentality are behind us and it is up to each of us as saltwater fishermen to not only learn to treat this valuable resource with respect, but to also teach other to respect them by our example.
Commercial fishermen are another majority "share holder" when it comes to accessing saltwater fish. Love them or hate them, commercial fishermen are a part of saltwater fishing. Just like recreational anglers, there are responsible, conservation minded commercial fishermen and there are malicious, short sighted abusers of our saltwater fishes. It's often said that commercial fishermen are responsible for many of the problems we currently have with saltwater species because they can do so much damage with just a single net compared to a saltwater fisherman with a single fishing rod. But one thing should be remembered while thinking inside such a bubble - for every one commercial fisherman there's probably 10,000 recreational anglers. Is it worse to waste 5,000 fish at one time or 1 fish 5,000 times? The fish and ecosystems certainly can't tell the difference - it's all the same to them.
